I'm sure there are some of you out there like me, who sometimes want stripes, and other times don't, and can't justify spending over $100 for a one time application. After reading a thread on MINI2 I decided to try it for myself. Total cost - $30 for 35" x 24" of plain white magnetic material from a local sign shop. I bought extra knowing I would screw up the first ones (I did, trying to cut them straight!).

Currently road tested at 100 MPH, the stripes remained in place no problem. They can be removed or added whenever I feel like it in about 15 seconds.

They are 4 1/2 inches wide, and approximately 33-34" long (it will differ depending where they are put.)

I'm going to add some black vinyl trim to make them look a little sharper! More pics when its done!

Corret me if I am wrong but you did say magnetic strips, right? Meaning they are not stuck on there like th vinyl ones? Doesn't that also mean that you, and anyone so inclined, can take them off in a snap? Sounds neat and all but if they can steal them from me as fast as I can put them on then where is the security?

Just a thought. :???:

Easy solution is right. You can remove and reapply as you wish! How much did it cost?

My mother had a set of magnetic flames on her Honda CRX. She left it parked outside most of the time and they were not stolen. Her problem is that she forgot to take them off one time when she went through an automatic car wash. I think we can guess what happened then....

You can't tell they are magnetic unless you actually try and take them off. So I assume most people will ignore them. But I'll probably leave them off at night, as they are so easy to put back on!

CooperSpeed, they cost about $30 for the material, thats it. I'm sure if people shop around, they can get the material cheaper.

I ended up having the shop cut them straight for me, as I found it impossible to get them straight when I tried to cut with an exacto knife/scissors. Glad I bought enough material for 2 sets!

No curve is necessary, the stripes can be perfectly straight.

Very nice!! I'm not a fan of stripes, but I think if ever do them, this is the way I'll go. Maybe I'll just put them on on a Saturday if I feel like it. Nice option! You must have cut the slight curve??? near the grill with an X-acto???

Thanks for the kind words guys! I'm tempted to make another set or two with different trim options/colours.

Bruce: With school nearing an end I definitely wouldn't be able to market them

Great job! I'm glad it worked for you too. I love my stripes and plan to make some variations of them soon. I also plan to sell them on E-Bay next week for those who prefer buying over DIY.

Joe,
REALLY nice job! Would you mind giving some more info on exactly what material you bought - what thickness, etc.? I can't wait to try this out! Thanks!

Joe, very impressive. But, what is a sign store and what do I ask for when I get there?

Thanks again for all the kind words everyone! Thats what makes this place such a pleasure to visit!

ScooterMan: I looked in my yellow pages under "Signs" and found tons of stores which will make signs for small businesses/individuals. They do signs for walls, doors, and magnetics for cars. I'm sure you will find at least a few places near you .

Chrisnl: The place I was at only had one type of magnetic for cars, and it is very thin. I think FireAnt measured it to be 0.0325 inches. I got a sheet of plain white magnet 24" x 35" which is big enough to make approximately five 4.5" wide stripes. They are about 33 to 34" long. I tried cutting the first ones myself, but did a really sad job at getting them straight, so I went back to the shop and they cut them for me. The only other cutting I did was to trim the ends to fit the car.

Warning: While I tested the stripes at 100 mph with no problems, I would advise anyone else who tries this to make sure that there is no way for air to get under the magnet in the front, and to be cautious and test the stripes first.

Oh yeah, I believe anyone trying this on a MC will need different measurements!

BTW, FireAnt deserves the credit for this wonderful idea, so here is his MCS with his magnetic stripes (hope you don't mind me borrowing this picture, FireAnt, its awesome!!!)

Info on his stripes can be found here!
