I just called 866-ASK-MINI to see if my car's been built yet. I asked the guy for the production code and he says they've discontinued that. Was he just feeding me a line or have they really stopped it? Not that it matters I guess. It'll get here when it gets here.

Did you ask if this means that they've discontinued the practice of letting you track your car's production by VIN number as well? Once you get your VIN (from the dealer, generally a few weeks after your order is actually submitted), the production code is moot anyway. But it would be a shame if this means that tracking is on its way out altogether.

No, I meant the three digit numerical code that tells exactly where it is in the production cycle...150 means the order is submitted, etc. Maybe I asked for the wrong thing. What's it called if not a "production code"?

FWIW...I've had my VIN for about a week or so and the guy said it's entering the body shop today. So, it won't be much longer anyway. But I wonder what's taking them so long? That new MINI book says one rolls off the line every 100 seconds and it takes 5 hours from start to finish. They've had four weeks...where's my car?

4 weeks at 100-seconds-per-car (Way too fast BTW)

I'd guess your car is behind the 24,192 cars in front of it!

Mine took about just about 8 weeks including being bumped off of two ships. It was worth the wait!!

The "three digit numerical code" is called the status code. Production number is the record locator (if you will) of your car's order specifications in the database until you get a VIN. Once you have a VIN, the production number is sort of redundant.

But I still don't know what you mean... They discontinued what? Do you mean that they discontinued giving you updates on the phone, or discontinued providing updated information on your order status period??

If you can't get the info on the phone, then just go to the online site with your VIN and you should get some info there (not updated more than once a week as I recall, but still helps with the waiting).

I moved from 'on order' to 'waiting for production' last Friday. I just called ASK-MINI this morning, and, according to Amanda I'm still status 150.

Yea - seems like mine's taking a relatively long time as well. But, since my original production date was 5/16, I'm still happy!

So...I'd try calling back. They should be able to give you some more detailed information.

I took it that the guy was saying that they were not going to be providing updates in regard to the status codes. But, since I didn't ask for the status code...

I'll just call them back.
