It depends on what you want in a car. Lots of great cars in that price range if you want a good appliance. The only one I know about which inspires passion and community is the R56 or the Mini Cabrio. There must be others which create passion for other people, but I don't get it.

Now used cars, that's another story.

heyjay1428: my wife and I owned both a 04 MCS and a 06 TL. PM me and I can share some of my thoughts on both cars with you.

heyjay. Drive the cars -- talk is just a way for your brain to justify it's prejudgice -- there is NO substitute for the seat of your pants and all the other sensory input. You drive with your other senses not your brain (ie; that's why so many people drive crappy cars and yack on the phone)
Test drive any car you are thinking about -- take notes and then you'll have a input for your brain to deal with. Your brain can justify a reason for buying any car - don't trust your brain.

You would like people here to provide you with a list of cars between 20 - 30K?

With all due respect, How about you go to Edmunds.com and do a bit of research and help yourself. In that way, you will learn about those cars.

Well, pretty much EVERYONE on this site chose the same car, so I'm not sure that this is the best place to ask .

Oh, and what the heck is a TL? Toyota Landcruiser.....I'm so confused .

Yeah Edmunds is a great place to look for information like this.

Last year before I bought my '06 MCS, I ended up making a spreadsheet of all the cars I was looking at with a list of categories to rate each car at. The TL and TSX were on that list, along with a VW Jetta GLI and a bunch of other cars. The MINI was one of the top 3 based on my own subjective ratings.

But in the end, I, like you, had wanted a MINI since I first saw the car in 2002. So I just bought it and haven't looked back!

I like my 03 MINI S MUCH more than I like my wife's 07 ES350 Lexus!!

If I had one car it would be the MINI

Drive each car you are looking at and then decide.

I've got a 2006 MCS-JCW and went a bit beyond that $30K target of your father's remarks.

Depends what you're looking for. MINI and TL are apples and oranges.
Did you want an apple? An orange? Or will any old fruit do?

Autotrader is a decent resource to review all cars in a category.
