Tach question - lighting?

Can someone look at their (standard, not chrono or nav) tach at night and tell me if the two hash marks on either side of the "6" light up either amber or red? On mine (on an '06 cabrio), there are single hash marks at every digit on the tach, and then there are hash-marks BETWEEN the numerals that are used for the red line (these illuminate even in the daytime). Trouble is, they don't light up red or amber around the "6" and it looks like they should. I opened the tach and I can see 2 LEDs in the proper places, but they don't illuminate when I turn on the headlights.

Just checking to see if I need warranty work or if that's just by design.

Thanks!

if they did light up, they would be red. The "red line" can be adjusted by your dealer with the computer connection. They can adjust it down so that it looks like the car red lines sooner. They will not illuminate until you have them "turned on" by the dealer if you want.

Mine are the same way and I have an 03....

OK, so it IS normal... Just needed to know because I'm testing a set of replacement gauges, and without the "extra" hashes lighting up, there's a dead-spot in the gauge lighting.

Thanks!

that shot is a replacement Tach....I put a blue face plate in it, so it is showing the lighting of the new tach.

The red does not show up well, but it looks OEM. The speedo is OEM as I have not switched to the blue plate yet.

So, yes, it is normal.

The one I'm testing has more openings around the periphery of the gauge, so the "missing" LEDs really make a HUGE gaping hole in the illumination. Guess it's either have the dealer turn on the extra LEDs or go back to the drawing board... Thanks, man!

ImagoX - so are you saying that on your current, that normal, guage, you have no missing/black tick marks? Can you provide a picture of it?

All gauges I've seen and dissassembles had tic marks starting at 5.5k. Depending on your manual/automatic transmission then, your redline would start at a different location.

Me.

Yeah my tick marks begin at 5.5k, but the red LEDs only illuminate starting at 6.5k (just like in Indigo's picture). Guess I'll have the dealership turn on the extra hash marks when I bring it in for oil service.

I am not 100% on this, but after talking to the head Mechanic at my dealer several years back, when that gets changed, it also changes the computers logging of when red line is hit. So, it there is damage to the car, and you have lowered redline, and there is engine damage, the computer is more likely to log if you hit that point earlier.

I would double check before you have it switch, personally, I don't think it is worth having a couple more red lights light up, but that is just me.

Brighter pic of the ticks, MCS tach. I believe on a MC, those ticks are lit, on MCS they are not.

No, it's based on tranny -- Manuals don't have 'em lit, auto's do. I have an MC and those are NOT lit on mine..

Me..
