Fill The Ferry Challenge
Here's the challenge. The Ferry that runs from Anacortes to Guemes Island (near Anacortes) is supposed to hold 22 cars. The challenge is to see how many MINIs it will hold. The Ferry boat manager thinks less than 28 . . . we think maybe 30? Let's prove him wrong!
On Saturday May 17th at 3:30pm, Club MINI Northwest will be meeting at the Guemes Island Ferry Terminal, located at 6th & I avenue in Anacortes, WA, and reserving the entire ferry for just MINIs. The ferry cost is $5.25 + $1.25 per passenger. After the trip to Guemes Island we will be off to tour the twisties and sights of the island. It's pretty small so a couple of times around should prove to be fun.
On the island there is 1, count ‘em, 1 deli/restaurant/bar, that will be serving up something special just for us! From then on, you are free to drive around the island or go back on the boat at your leisure.
There will be a couple of professional photographers hanging out so there may be an opportunity to purchase some real quality work. You can leave your information with them on the day of the event.
So come out everybody and let's see how many MINIs we can stuff on to a ferry boat! Please RSVP Tim Whitman @ edpsych1@fidalgo.net. Also let us know if you plan to eat at the restaurant or not. The dining area only holds 60 people.
p.s. Please keep in mind that not all MINIs may get on the ferry at the same time. After all, that's the nature of the challenge, to see how many we can load on the boat. So it's going to be important to RSVP early!
See You There!!

Aargh... May 17 is the VERY DAY I am planning/hoping to pick up my new MINI in Fife. I won't be able to get up there to the islands, though this sounds like a great outing... but have fun and I will try to make the next PNW get-together!

STAGING AREA IDEA:
The Safeway area parking lot! A friend of mine is going to have his trailer smoker / BBQ set up in the Safeway area parking lot. He runs the Armadillo BBQ sauce business, and cooks 1/2 chickens and bratwurst in the summer as a promotion. This is the weekend (5-17) is the Waterfront festival. The festival is across the street. I think I will be there around noon, have a Bratwurst and wander the festival till its time to go to the Ferry. Its a large parking area and we would get allot of attention form the festival. His food is inexpensive and GOOD, perfect lunch before the Ferry ride and dinner, or just a good visible place to park.

Congrats on filling the ferry that looks great.
Please don't take this as one ups-manship I just wanted to share the ferry pictures from the MINIMeet 2003 held in Kingston, Ontario last September.
We had 49 MINIs on the ferry.
This year we are shooting for 60.

Good luck and Happy motoring,
Jack

I found info here: http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/ClubMINI/
You have to login and have a yahoo id to view the messages. Search
for "ferry". This is the most current info I've found:
After receiving all the replies and tabulating dates, etc,
the 2nd Annual MINI Challenge to Guemes Island is officially
scheduled for Saturday, May 8th, 2004. We will meet again
at Causland Park, in Anacortes to form a line, and then
drive to the Guemes Ferry Dock to load on the 3:00 ferry (as
before, the time will be a little flexible to ensure that
the ferry is loaded with MINI's only). To be sure that we
beat our last attempt, I need to know once again who is
coming for sure. I know some folks had appointments and
schedule conflicts, but the event is over a month off, so if
you can make accommodations, that would be cool. Remember,
we need 30 MINI's to totally fill the boat and set the
record.
Spencer, are you going to be coming and bringing your
walkie-talkies again? Your help was invaluable the last
time!! : )
Hope you all can make it. Please confirm and stay tuned for
updates.

Yes you can come. they are looking for 30 cars to fill the ferry and any extras will catch the next boat. They will wait to start the tour around the island.
This event has been published inthe Guemes Island bulletin and all the residents along the route will be out to wave.

Cool!
Here's some more info:
More info
We meet at Causland Park at 2:00 pm, then start lining up
for the ferry around 2:30. Depending on trafffic, we may
get on the 3:00, or the 3:30 boat. Since it is a Saturday,
the ferry runs until Midnight. So feel free to stay as long
as you like! And if there is a dance, there will be plenty
of time to rock & roll.
It's important to note that the Ferry to Guemes is NOT,
repeat NOT, one of the state ferries. The Guemes Ferry is a
County operated ferry boat that is located at 6th and I -
Avenue in the city of Anacortes. The State Ferries are
located on the west side of Fidalgo Island (more in the
country) and don't even go to Guemes. It can be a little
confusing because when you come into Anacortes you will see
all these signs pointing the way to the Washington State
Ferries. Whatever you do, Don't follow those signs! Since
we will be meeting at Causland park, all you need to do is
take Commercial Avenue into Anacortes, as it exits off
Highway 20. Turn right on to Commercial (around 42nd street
& Commercial) and drive about 2 miles (yep, it's a long
street). When you come to the intersection of 8th &
Commercial, turn left and go about 2 blocks. Causland Park
will be right in front of you and you will see all the
MINI's. The park is located at the intersection of 8th & N
- Avenue. The Guemes Ferry Terminal is about 5 blocks from
Causland Park and we will caravan there.
I will provide more specific information as well as
information about buying food, etc, as we get closer to the
date. I also hope to get confirmation about the
commemorative T-shirt very shortly and will also update you
on that.
Have a good one!
