the input and out put shafts are differnt... also due to gearing... you are probably better off sticking with the cooper tranny. the 2002-2004 s trannys have too tall of gearing and you would greatly reduce performance

I wouldn't try it. It would cost a lot more to do that, then just to fix the problem.

id buy the mania gear box... that is if they still sell it! that will transform your car unlike anything else you could do to a cooper! We put one in a cooper and the results were just nutty!

You would have to also buy a 6spd shifter and cables Cooper S O/S & N/S driveshafts Cooper S gearbox mount, ally flywheel and Cooper S clutch Cooper S master cylinder to slave cylinder pipe and slave pipe hose.

The worst job is changing the steel pipe from the master to the slave

That's not the upgraded Midlands box... The upgraded Midlands box can only be gotten from MINIMania UK...

Txwerks has given you our only sensible option,i think i read somewhere that Minimania was having problems getting a supply of boxes to rebuild,so you could ask them to sell the parts and have it rebuilt if there's a supply problem.I have done buisness with them before and find them very helpful.

Steve's Auto Clinic 8189 891 6109 has done at least one 5 spd to 6 spd upgrade. They had to change the flywheel or something in the starter area I beleive. Wasn't that big of a deal for them.

So if this swap has been done did they lose any performance from the different ratio's? I would love to have a tranny that I wouldn't have to worry about blowing in my quest for performance

Think that the 07's six speeds will bolt up to an older non S?

No. It's a totally new engine and the engine is turned around 180 degrees in the engine bay, so the layout is completely different.

i can't find the midlands trany anywhere they seem to of stoped makeing it. and the link to the one in the uk seems to be different from the one in the usa. does anyone have any links to like parts pages where i can buy stronger gears and syncros so i can rebiuld the trany myself? because i don't have deep enough pockets to just keep replaceing transmissons that can't suport the power i throw at them. and i was reading about someone on this forum trying to swap a srt-4 engine into a mini could you swap in a different type of transmisson?

I am planning on doing the same thing but the dealer told me that it is not a direct fit and would need to find an aftermarket kit for the swap. I have a 6 ready to go but need to find this kit!

I'm just not sure why you'd want the Getrag 6's gearing... The Midlands and Getrag 5 are much more suited to the Cooper's powerband. It's one reason there's not as much of a difference between the Cooper and S on the track as people think there might be (and especially not at the autocross)...

Now, if you change the final drive on the Getrag 6, or went with close ratio gearset, I could see doing the swap - but that would add a LOT of cost in both parts and labor.

Don't give me any ideas...

well i see what you mean with the power band and all but i just can't get over the fact that at 75mph your doing 3600-3700 rpm's the car just feels like it needs a 6th gear or like over drive or something...

is it possible to just rebuild the guts of the tranny with better parts? I wouldn't mind having this as an option.

Looks like a market opportunity to me. Some transmission specialist here in the USA needs to start remanufacturing Midlands. There are thousands of earlier Coopers that will be getting older, and we're bound to be seeing more failures. Any one know of a good transmission reman shop that would be interested in developing a market niche?

So will someone tell me the exact difference between the midlands tranny and the stock tranny that comes with the car are there any ratio chages or is it all just higher quality componets?
