R50/53 Sunroof Rattle
Sunroof Rattle
I started noticing a rattle in my sunroof area of my week old MCS when going over bumps. I could only hear it when the sunroof was closed. I found it was a torx screw that didn't seem to be tightened all the way and the metal washer was making the noise. I figured I would just tighten the screw and all would be well. The problem is that the screw seems to be as tight as it will go. I really don't want to force it and cause damage especially since it is brand new. I guess I will have to take it in to the dealer. What a pain! Anyone else have this problem? I would think it should have been caught during PDI.
One of the things you may look at is the deflector as well. I know on my 2003 mcs there is a rattle when the temperature gets below 50ish. I have done some checking on these forums, and one of the culprits is possibly the deflector rubbing against the sunroof while it is closed. I can open mine up, and the rattle stops. One of the fixes for this is applying the fuzzy side of some velcro tape to the area where the deflectors rub the sunroof.
Not sure if this helps any, as I havent tried the fix on mine, but I certainly know how annoying that rattle can be
... good luck!

my rattle was the mesh shade......when in the open position, I noticed that this annoying intermittant rattle would go away if I started to close the mesh shade a fraction of an inch, so I cut one of those little pink eraser tops that you put on top of a pencil to replace a worn out pencil eraser and cut it in half and pressed each half into the rear of the mesh shade's track to act as a spacer or a stop to keep the shade from springing all the way open....no more rattle
yes and yes

worked like a champ
took quite a while to figure out where the rattle came from ... I was chasing all around the plastic sunroof surround. Then I tried a lil velcro fuzzy on the side of the flaps you see from driver seat when roof is open. I could see rub marks on them....I put the velcro over the rub marks and no more cold wx rattle!
Similarly a long annoying dash rattle, also cold induced, was fixed by using a few fuzzy tabs on the leading edgle of the dash top which can rub against the windshield. Found the rub marks and padded then with 1/2 inch squares of felt....no more rattles there..... Just remember that a new windscreen means ya got to start over on this one...
both these fixes have helped maintain sanity while driving my 02 S daily
I mentioned it to my service advisor in passing that the sunroof seemed to be rattling when I took my car in for an oil change. They took the whole thing apart and rebuilt it...no questions asked. That was over a year ago. The roof hasn't rattled since.
For those that think it's the sunshade, it might be a different kind of rattle. Mine was noticeable that it was coming from the track somewhere. I suspect DKSLVRMINI's issue is similar to what mine was.
