My Cooper S might be totalled...

I was coming home from Indianapolis about 3 hours ago and hit a deer(buck) going a little over 70. When i hit it the windshield shattered and all airbags deployed, and i lost control and ended up in a drainage ditch on the side of the highway. Every panel is messed up to some degree. The front end is completely messed up and both radiators are punctured and were leaking quite heavily. Don't have pictures, I'm still shaking from it, I have a couple bruised bones and scratches all over my face. This is really depressing, I have put so much into it, and it's my first car so it really hits me hard.

Seriously, Cougars ought to be relocated and bring the deer population under control. We have a bunch, want some?

So glad you are ok, Mikey.

That's all that matters. Think about how much fun you've had getting your MINI where it is (was), and hopefully your insurance will allow you to do it all over again.

Sorry to hear about the accident but glad that your ok...sounds like your MINI did what it was supposed to in a crash like that. The safety of this car was one of my final deciding points when I got mine. Hearing about an accident like this is a horrible thing but on the flip side it is nice to hear that the safety features do save lives. Definately keep us posted and post some pics when available.

Well my insurance adjuster is at the bodyshop right now with my dad, and he thinks it can be fixed fairly easily, maybe even have it back to normal in a week or so which is shocking, when seeing the damage to the car, but he isn't sure on the bodyshop's opinion. My insurance will go up more than likely but I really don't care. My friend who was following me said while she was scared and worried to say the least when she saw it, the way the deer went in the air was pretty neat. She said it flew a good 6 or 8 feet over the roof and came down like a punted football

I narrowly avoided a Kamikazi deer myself this week or I might have beat you to the post. I hope it all works out. Keep us up to date.

Man, that really sucks, but glad you're ok.
I am constantly looking at the sides of the road to try and catch the little flicker of deer eyeball reflecting my headlights.

WOW. Glad to read your ok Mikey. That's my biggest fear when travelling at night. I've had a few close encounters over the last month or so, fortunately I haven't actually hit any of the deer...

Hope everything works out and you get your MCS back.. good as new. At least you've found some humor in this. Keep us posted...

Glad you are ok

SO Glad you escaped injury......

Hitting an animal at even 50 is really dangerous. It is really dark outside of the city here in Reno, and with the fires we have had (destroyed the deer's food supply)...lots of deer are moving down the mountains for food (like eating peoples shrubs).....We even get a bear or 2 during the year...It will get even worse as the snow hits!

They make these little whistle like affairs (mount them in your grill) that make a noise the deer can hear when you are moving...may be a good idea for your next mini (or any other car you have)

They really work and scare the deer off the road.

Saw an Escalade truck hit a big buck a few weeks ago...Buck was a mess...so was the escalade! ...Probably at 50-55 mph which is the speed limit there.

I'm thinkin an alta lightbar too... it didn't jump out in front of me it was already in the road but at that speed it was so hard to react fast enough.

Wow, glad you made it out in realtively decent shape, these cars are designed to take the hit so you don't have to.

Deer are a big problem out by me (edge of farm country so they've got plenty of room to graze, I've been lucky so far, but they do raise the hairs on the back of my neck. Iwas hit once in the side, swerved, took hair off the deer, but no damage to the car (my last car, hair all in the key hole on the door)

I've had little sucess witht he whistles. What was nerve racking was in FL the deer were accustomed to the population increase and at night would be 10 ft off the highway, as you went by at 70+ thank god they stayed put.

If they can fix it great, if not the MINI can be replaced.

Sorry to hear about your accident and I'm glad you're OK!

You are very lucky to have only received some minor bumps and bruises. A friend of mine hit a deer recently with the deer going through the windshield and ending up in the car with him!!! He wasn't as lucky as you as he received some major lacerations and broken bones not to mention that his car (Nissan Sentra) was totaled.

The MINI did its job well, saving you from serious injury, as it sounds like you took a wild ride after striking that buck.

You will get another MINI and all will be well again.

First off, Bob is right - you can replace a car. What matters most is that you are alright.

Second - Gromit has hit on a point here. The deer population is exploding. I am seeing about half a dozen carcasses on the side of the road each week.

I'm all for culling - seriously.

If we hadn't killed off all the wolves, we wouldn't be having these problems! Glad to hear you're ok. Did you check on the deer?

Damn deer.

I had a recent run in with one as well. The sucker just popped out of the woods and was running toward/along side the passenger side of the car. All of a sudden it jumped up and over the top of my car. I could hear it hit the antenna as it went over. Scared the **** out of me. No damage for me.

Sorry you weren't so lucky.

Hope you feel better.
