True. Only other thing to be aware of, is if a deer "shakes off" the dazzle, and tries to evade in the direction you chose to evade.

Either way, deer population control is the best solution. Cougars anyone?

Sorry about your car and glad you are ok. I'm forever seeing them on my way to work. Have only hit one in 13 years but have dodged at least 20. I wonder if those deer whistles you put on the front of your car work. The one I did hit was in my Ford Ranger about 5 years ago and not my Mini(Thank God).

No factory fogs for me, I'm thinking 007 style machine guns would help with population control, now only if I could convince my local Sheriff....

Lighting generally gives me time enough to stop and wait it out, my encouter ocured when the deer was facing away from me so I didn;t see it until I was about 50 ft away which when it heard me decided to jump into the road, I swerved and it bursh the side of my car, had it turned its head 3 sec earlier I'd have beena ble to stop. Living out where I do you tend to pick up the eye scanning habits quickly and spot everything from strays to raccons to trash bags blowing in the wind.

How do you figure (your insurance will go up as a result of the deer hit)? Deer hits are usually covered under the Comprehensive section of the insurance policy as an act of deer - kind of like a huge rock hitting your car while driving. Glad you survived relatively unscathed.

Ins companies see him as a higher risk now, I have a friend going through quite a bit of difficulty finding ins. because they were the no fualt car in multiple accidents, ins. companies seek out a spotless record from the under 25 crowd and if your anything but expect to pay a pretty penny more than oyu already were.

But I still don't see where the higher risk occurs. A deer hit is not a chargable event; therefore, no increase in premium expense. I had a deer hit on a 1995 Volvo that I had owned for no more than 2 months that ended up costing State Farm $5,000 to repair. There was no increase in insurance premium after the episode.

Multiple accidents (presumably car vs. car) is a different matter than a deer hit.

Reading Skiploder's post reminded me of another deer hit...

This one happened to a friend who owns a H1 Hummer - the deer was instantly converted to sausage.... And, apart from blood all over the bodywork, there was no damage to the H1....

An insured would have to have a LOT of comp claims for an insurance company to cancel them or deny them insurance (in the case of a new customer seeking insurance).

Insurance is regulated at the State level so I can't tell you exactly what the rule is in the State where Motor On's friend lives. However, here in Maryland, we can legally non-renew a policyholder if he/she has 4 comprehensive claims in a 3-year period. BUT.... we rarely cancel anyone for comp claims UNLESS the have perhaps 6 or 7 and they are large losses (i.e. stolen vehicles). Of course, the policyholder always has the option of dropping the comp coverage which would preclude us from taking any action.

But CaminiFan is correct, a comp loss such as an animal strike cannot be used to increase a policyholder's premium.

I think the only way they might justify (and I would not agree) raising the insurance rates in this instance, is if they could prove speeding at the time of the venison conversion.

God-Almighty, Mikey. Your news just sends chills up and down my spine, and, while your car suffered from the collision with Bambi, I'm so very happy you are "OK".

I use my fogs religiously at night and sometimes even in murky daylight. In the last week, I have had 2 closer-than-I-ever-wanted calls. Upon hearing about those deer whistles [which I do not have], I think that, besides the foglights, what made the critter move off the roadway was the whistling noise my ALTA CAI makes.

It will be covered under comprehensive I know that, what I don't know is what the insurance company will do. Pictures are still pending, the ones I took were only of the front grill portions with my camera phone and my dad didn't give me the media card before he sent it to the insurance adjuster. Hopefully later today or tomorrow I will find out. This deer was seriously like a ghost deer. It was creepy like it just appeared like 50 feet in front of me like it jumped there and I didn't catch it. After I hit it (in the slow lane) It ended up a quarter mile back from my stopping point, which was against a tree, and at the edge of the median, almost in the two opposing lanes of traffic. It didn't suffer I killed when I hit it, but it flew and and rolled that far. The trooper had a tough time finding it (it took us 20min) and I was thinking at the time this deer magically appeared and disappeared... pretty creepy.

Glad to hear you are OK and sorry about what happened to your car. I had a similar incident about a year ago at 75 MPH in SE Michigan. Mine was a glancing blow by a small deer, so no air bag depolyment or loss of control. My damage was limited to front end exterior sheet metal, no structural damage. I was able to drive the approximate 100 miles to home (shedding crunched plastic pieces all the way). The repair costs were close to $6,000. My insurance (State Farm) did not go up one cent because this was covered under comprehensive.

If every panel is bent, it may be better if the car is replaced. Best of luck in getting your car repaired/replaced.

Well here's some pics... these are the ones from my camera phone... sorry they couldn't be bigger or that there could be more but I was kinda in shock at that time and didn't really think about it. This is just the front. The passenger side door and panel underneath the turn signal (proper name for this somebody?) are creased from my contact with the tree. Also my passenger side mirror is gone and the side skirt is broken in half.

The reason the ground looks wet? The radiator was leaking/broken.

A Very Happy Ending... Or It Looks As Though It Might Be...

I just got word from my dad that the insurance company is NOT going to total it. While I, and don't flame me for this, had aspirations of a different car, an R33 Nissan Skyline, I don't think it would come even close to replacing this MINI. I'm SO happy right now. They said it would probably take a couple weeks to fix but hopefully everything will be back and at least close to how it was before. And the best part, it's all at no cost to me, and my premiums will NOT go up. While I did not dodge the deer, I did dodge a bullet.
