Going to be in Hawaii
Going to be in Hawaii
Hi all,
I am going to be in Hawaii on the island of Oahu from 7-20 Nov.
I won't have my car, or even a rental, and I probably won't get out much. But I hope to see some MINIs when I am not working.

Well, we are going for training, and all of the sudden someone decides to worry about money.
make sure to hit Kaneke's BBQ in Waimanalo and the Tikki head at Banzai Beach. There's a great little restaurant in an old quonson hut there that was the best and cheapest food we had on the island. Run by Brazilian surf bums chasing the Endless Summer. Also....great burger joint in Haleiwa Town. Those three places made our time on the island memorable....the expensive places we ate on Waikiki and Honululu weren't even close.
get ready to eat...there's ono food all over the island...i think some of our threads on here talked a bit about some of our fave spots, desert included.
of course, get ready to view some big surf, as you'll be hitting the start of the pro surf season here. really, there is nothing like watching huge surf while standing on the beach. unfortunately, you'll need to get ready for the crowds too, as the roads on the north shore are woefully inadequate for crowds, but that is also part of the north shore's charm.
just a reminder, lotsa food places all over, including north shore. burger joint is probably kua'aina in haleiwa, but it's also in town at ward centre/village. shave ice either matsumoto's or aoki's. desert ted's bakery in sunset, with chocolate haupia the most popular by far. kahuku shrimp trucks, take your pick. personally giovanni's or the truck in the old sugar mill parking lot. and if you're adventurous, stop by the kahuku superette acrosss the kahuku high school, and get some poke; i prefer ahi limu, which i swear is among my most favorite poke on the island. poke with steamed rice in the bottom is the most popular lunch or snack item there.
i think we're having a mini event at aloha tower marketplace sunday nov. 12th 9-1. most of us should be there as it's also a charity event too i believe. and yeah, aloha tower has some ono food places too.

My 2 cents....
Kyle covered it pretty well but the good news is that you can take the bus all the way around the island for about $2.50. The schedules are great and you can get just about anywhere on them.
..and it seems that Patagonian GT has been to Kaaawa and Kualoa Ranch.

Nice photos Patagonian!
Kua'aina has good burgers but my favorite is the mahi sandwhich!
The old Kua'aina location in Haleiwa has a great sandwhich place (but of course the place is super small, hence, Kua'aina's move) that has some great local fish sandwhiches too.

, ate fresh roasted macadamia nuts at the place near Kualoa, ski'ed the dunes at Makaha....
Thanks all for the heads up, I will check the schedule to see what is going on the 12th, I may swap shifts with someone if I can to get out to the event. Hope I see some of you out there. So if you see a goofy white guy in a mustach waving at you in your MINI/Mini from a bus dont be suprized.

yep, that's pretty much all sides of the island of oahu.
and i must say that the bus is the cheapest tour ride around, plus it's got ac.
waikiki is definitely too touristy and just plain crowded.
take some hikes, probably the most inexpensive way to enjoy it's beauty. just check the weather forecast before.
that pic of chinaman's hat i believe is hard to get...via 4x4 on the kualoa ranch grounds? i guess you must really get antsy when the winter storms come rampaging thru.
btw our winter season seems to be here as of a few weeks ago. everything is starting to turn lush green again, including diamond head and koko head.

Hope you can make it to the MINI at Aloha Tower event. It is sponsored by MINI of Hawaii and our MINI club will be working with them. We'll have about 25 to 30 MINI/Minis on display at the Aloha Tower for this event. The Hawaii MINI Motoring Club will have its annual MINI to the MAX event, which is a food/toy drive, in conjunction with the MINI at Aloha Tower event. Look for the Cabrio full of food and toys!
I am not as chatty in person as I am on line so I didnt talk to anyone, but I did enjoy the cars.
I caught the bus down there, I was the one with the Redwood Empire shirt and listening to an Ipod. That was the first time I have been off base since I got here. I enjoyed the show. There were some nice cars out there. I may be a little biased but the Pepper White/White with the PW trim was hot.

But we have another event coming up this Saturday Nov 18th for a cruise and stop at eating places. Kinda hard not to like that.
Are you free? Want to come along? I think it is not allday. Tell us how we can reach you and we can make arrangements.
That nice PW MCS that won "People's Choice" is for sale. 2003 model with 3000 miles on it. They hardly ever drive it. Only on fair weather days. It's amazing they got it to the car show. Got some nice silver SSR comp 16x7.5" rims and Avon tires. Bilstein PSS9 coilovers and a bunch of JCW kit upgrades.

For MINI things talk to MINI of Hawaii (the dealership) or go to the Hawaii MINI Motoring Club site or Forum on NAM.
Usually it's a busy time but who knows.
Sorry to also thread-jack but at our MINI at Aloha Tower / MINI to the MAX event yesterday, I had Bill (mellowyellow on NAM) and Catherine from the SMOKY MOUNTAIN MINIS MINI COOPER CLUB come-up to me and say hi. They were here on vacation and said they heard about our gathering and stopped by to say "hi".
For Hawaii stuff to do see-

.....hmm the car rental, how bad is the traffic? as I come from OZ and do RHD, but last time at the dragon, on only got on the wrong side of the road once or twice
....in shopping center carparks.. no one to follow to stay on the correct side, so the mind goes in to autopilot, the looks from the locals where classic tho

That's not good. There's so much to see and do.
