R50/53 HELP! Cooling fan wont stop!
HELP! Cooling fan wont stop!
This morning for the first time when I turn off my MINI Cooper S (2002) the cooling fan just keep running.
I've tried to locate the fuse to no avail. What is the fuse(s) to pull?
Right now I've pulled ALL of the following fuses as indicated inside the cover of the fuse cover of the fuses box and from my Bentley manual
FL9, R4, F05. So what fuse(s) should I be pulling?
Now on to the problem. The fun just keeps running and running. Today was the first day this has ever happened. The car is NOT hot (at least as indicated by the temp gauge).
Is there a temp sensor to tell fan when go start and stop? Has anyone experienced this problem before? What was the "fix"?
Im very experienced taking cars apart but I've not done much at all on my MINI (brakes front and rear has been about it).
Is replacing the sensor covered in the Bentley manual. That thing is so thick i cant find the reference.

there's a connector on the right side(when looking down onto the engine) of the radiator/front bumper, it's square and i'm pretty sure it has 3 wires on it, that's for the cooling fan. disconnect it and the fan will stop.
the fan motor is going bad and keeps runing, you will probably need a new unit. good luck!

My temp guage displays the exact same thing every time I drive the car. Sometimes the fan stays on, sometimes not. If you come back in an hour and it is still on, then worry.
But if this is that abnormal, bring it to the dealer. Complain and they should investigate.

The connector that Joey talked about is your cooling fan relay, replace that part first, it is sticking "open" causing your problem most likely. ( I work at an auto dealership) It should be a small, one inch square plastic box that when you pull out, has three small silver "conection pins" To make sure of my "with out seeing the car" diagnoises, try to find the same looking box in your enigne fuse panel and swap them. if all works well, then you know what it needs
Could a get a little more help locating the relay? Is it in the fuse box that is in the engine compartment or is it outside the fuse box.
Outside the fuse box, centered of the car, right above the yellow warning to not stick my fingers in the fan, are a few connections....one is a small size sqare unit held on with a couple of allen screws (that doesnt look like a relay)...there is another connection above that.
then, off to the right side of the car ...by an ac tube ...are two connectors...yes one has 3 wires and looks like the wires plug into a black box...maybe 1 inch square.
above that is another connector with tiny wires.
which one is the fan relay?
also, why doesnt yanking fuses shut off the fan?

You could disconnect the negative battery terminal in a crisis...
I would think a relay, like most, would be located in one of the fuse box locations. Did you check the manual for potential locations? I'm at work or I'd look myself.

The relays are most of the time in the engine fuse panel, if not you may need to do some online checking. Most of the time, there are 3 or 4 together. Pull one at a time and replace it if it does not shut right off. I will try to check online for you.
ok i found the connect that powers the fan and it looks like all that is there is a connector...no relay...
under the lid of the fuse box there are 4 light green colored relays labled r1, r2, r3 and r4. r4 has a fan symbol
i switched out that relay with another one.
same thing happens.
swapping relays or pulling out the r4 relay has no affect on the fan...it gets power whether or not the relay is in place or not.

oh yes...and here's a tip: if you disconnect the battery in the truck of an "s" and then close the hatch, since the latch is electrically driven you cant get the hatch to open to reconnect the battery cable.
ask me how i know....

check this earlier thread with a few links which may help...also a diagram is in there somewhere

based on the discussion in the above listed posting it gets down to either the relay or the entire fan unit.
certainly a relay sounds more simple than replacing the entire fan assembly because of a "resistor pack"
has anyone else had any problem like this. what was the fix?
has anyone changed out the fan assembly? how difficult is that and what's the cost?

well I looked at kbseto's thread, and there is a relay somewhere, but it sounds like a comon concern I have not had to deal with yet. Sounds like you are going to have to have the fan module replaced. Sorry I could not help with an easy fix
This is not an uncommon problem. Try doing a simple search here for "fan" and you should find lots of info and probably most of your answers. I just had the same problem and had to replace the whole fan assembly like many others. Here is what came up when I searched:

i have my bentley manual and it says to get to the fan assembly i must remove the radiator. looks like a lot of work but nothing too fancy and no special tools.
what everyone's opinion? since the "swap the relays" thing isnt netting any results does that point to a fan assembly that is shot.
and further given a lot of time and a shop full of tools, should i change the fan assembly myself or take it in to my friendly MINI dealer. (btw i HATE being at the mercy of a service department...in last 20 years i cant recall ever going to the dealer for an out of warranty fix)

whoa...buzz06s...remove the entire front end?
my bentley manual says "slaken modular front end and pull forward to allow access to radiator" ... it says i can "be loosened and slid forward on special tools or long bolts"
is this a "slide out" fix or "remove" fix.
also, although it will suck what in the heck would the dealer charge for this...ugh.
