R56--any thoughts? Anyone thinkin' 'bout buying?

now that motoringfile and mini2 have pics and details of the next gen mini up, i'm curious if any current Hawaii MINI owners are interested or have any other opinion?

i'm not a current owner, but come the beginning of next year, i will be.

Well, I am kinda use to the my 06.... The new 07 outside isn't bad...some differences that I would have to get use to...but the inside is not as nice as the current ones...

The more I drive my 03' MCS the more I like it and the more balanced proportions it has for the dash parts/dials/design.

The new one seems overly enhanced almost cartoonish by comparison.

And I see other car makers try to copy this- ever seen a dash on the new PT Cruiser convertible? It's a copycat of the painted MINI dash.

New R56? Well I have to wear out my R53 first!

hmmm. have you taken a look at the pics here:

http://mini2.com/article383-mini2-ex...-overview.html

(granted, much of the dash covered up in those pics, and there is taping of certain exterior deets)

here:

http://motoringfile.com/2006/07/27/m...tos/#more-5040

and here?

http://www.mini2.com/forum/2nd-gen-i...or-images.html

these are side by side 2nd and 1st gen MINI pics:

http://mini2.com/article386-1st-gene...otographs.html

Honestly, I think most non-MINI enthusiasts won't be able to tell the difference exterior wise right away. And the internal details, while heavily covered up in the pics, look good to me. I do prefer certain aspects of the current model, like the door bezel. Of course, I am not a current owner, so I'm not coming from a current owner's perspective and experience. From what I'm seeing, a lot of current owners don't like the changes. *shrug*

I will say this--this video got me salivating and saying, "mmmm....turbo!!!"

MINI comparo

--Cool post devylinaskurt! The side by side comparison showed me some things I didn't notice. Hmm first let's get the unpleasantries out of the way shall we?

1.) I don't like that they put in fake hood scoop. Even if it is turbo a functional one wouldn't have cost that much more and would have dumped more cool air onto the engine.

2.) The interior at the time of this photo shoot doesn't seem that refined and as Brad said, a little cartoony. The thing I don't like the most is the radio in the center clock. Ick. Not much room for aftermarket there.

3.) The curves are the one thing I love about my MINI and it seems to be a little subdued in the new model.

Now onto the good stuff that I like.

1.) Turbo! Twist a little **** and your boost goes up and weeeeee you go! Lovin that change.

2.) Those sexy mirrors are cool!

3.) The flip switches in the overhead are way gnarly!

4.) The new key is COOL! I wanna push the start button!

---That being said I think the new 07 will be a fun addition to the MINI family. Even if all the brits are getting upset that their plugging in a french engine in their national icon...but... don't get me started on that one.

If you like it devylinaskurt go for it. Don't let all these old timers tell you different. The MINI infection is very personal. Once you get infected it's your own personal virus. Aint no one gonna tell ya that red is better than black, or that silver roof is better than white. It's all you.

But a little piece of advice. Don't buy the first few off the line. Wait a few months then order yours, or if you can hold out, buy at the end of the production year. A lot of bugs seem to get worked out by then, and the boys in England seem to be a little out of shape when they start production at the beggining of the year. Just a suggestion.

Hope this helps.

*sigh* i wish i could hold out before ordering mine. actually, i was gonna get an 06, but as more and more info came out about the 07, i found myself really excited by it. i'm well aware of the caution that it's never a good idea to buy a first year, but that risk is one i'm willing to take. in fact, i am hopefully expectant that i'll have fewer problems than those who brought the first ever coopers, since quite a good bit of what i've read states that quality wise, the 07 is, overall, an improvement. time will reveal all....

i think i read on motoringfile how solidly built these 2nd gen minis were gonna be. just reading that and then top it off with the plans for the jcw mini in '08 straight from the factory with the suspension and brakes included for hopefully about the same pricing as the current jcw, has me thinking about '08 as my next mini possibly, which would place my current mini at 5 years old.

Although I still don't love the center console, I really do like the dash and all in all it looks like a MINI to me. .

I got to say the interior looks pretty good to me. I am not sure however if I like the combo radio. I also wonder if they will have an option to move the speedometer next to the tachometer.

....lol over at mini2 you are considered "persona non grata" if you were to post any of those links today. They keep deleting any related posts.
As if they don't want to spoil the corporate surprise.
I thought the community should have come first.

Thanks

ps i understand why it is happening, but i don't like it at all.
