Dyno Results....

So, I went and got my MINI dyno'd today! Man was it fun, but it took a long time to set up everything.

Long story short, I made 141whp out of my stock 03' MCS. Only thing aftermarket was a HAI. I'll scan and post up the dyno sheet later so you tech's can tell me if it ran good or not. Humidity was 43% I believe. Oh, and according to the computer, the guy hit 145mph?

That dyno figure is on the low side of normal for a bone-stock MCS. If you put the stock airbox back on you'd probably regain another HP or two, that HAI isn't helping you out any. Not sure about the 145MPH figure, as that's faster than redline in 5th but not redline in 6th. Nevertheless, they should have used 4th gear as that's about 1:1 for the transmission.

Thats cool, was hoping you'd post the results after I read you were dyno'ing it.

Yea. I will later. The sheet is still in my car, and I have to find time to scan it. I'll probably to that tomorrow morning sometime, so I'll update it.

What kind/brand of dyno? What settings? If you post the results they will indicate.

Did they set up a fan to blow "cool" air into the intercooler/hood scoop? Hood open or closed? If you took any photos of the "setup" while being dyno'd, please post them as well.

Many of these factors will have an affect on the final results. Having a "baseline" can be a very useful tool if you decide to do any mods later. This way you can see what mods really make improvements. Just make sure you duplicate the conditions if you are going to do any comparisons later.

I'm not sure what kind of Dyno they had, but the hood was open and they had a little tiny blower fan pointed at the top radiator part. They did three runs, I believe 2 in 4th gear and one in 3rd.

Here is the website if they have info on there. www.rstyleperformance.com

Says on their website they have a dynocom racing dyno. Here is their website, but I'm not sure which dyno they have. http://www.dynocom.net/home.htm

Edit* And in a couple of days (hopefully) the video will be on streetfire, which I will also post here.

Sounds like you ran some pretty decent numbers! Congrats! Look forward to seeing the dyno sheets!

polizei,

The more I learn about Dyno's the more I find that there are many variables and ways the "shops" set up and perfrom the dyno.

All my point is that you try to duplicate the exact conditions each time so that you can get a meaningful comparison.

Depending on temperature, humidity, and how the "fans" are set, your results can vary widely. Cool air is more dense, therefore you get more 02 in the cylinder for combustion. The more 02 and the more fuel, results in more HP.

Sounds like you have a good number and are happy with the results. That's what counts. You may get a bunch of other figures from others that have dyno'd, but unless they were done under the same conditions, I would not use them for any comparison.

Cool, thanks for the advice...I really don't know all that much about dynoing at all. I know you lose HP from engine HP to WHP, so I was hoping for 130whp, and I got 141. Oh well....place to start I guess! I don't think I'll ever be able to hit 200whp unless I SC (M62) or Twincharge it though.

Polizei,

My understanding is that you give up about 20% from flywheel to wheel through the drive train.

Your "stock" MINI-S should deliver 162 HP @ the flywheel, which results in about 130 (129.6) HP at the wheels. If you are getting 141 HP @ the wheels then you are getting about 177 HP at the flywheel. This would be a 15 HP increase (9.2%) over "stock".

Now when someone says that their "gadget" will give you 30 more HP, you can actually check and verify. Remember that some mods, such as DFIC intercooler are hard to verify under dyno, unless you have the right "fan" cooling set up.

Many of the other mods should be able to show a quantitative difference under dyno, if conditions are the same.

Hi Cody....

For the record, the accepted driveline loss is 12% not 20% so you saw about
158hp at the crank. Little low for a stock MINI S but it could be a function
of the specific dyno you used, or Intercooler heat soak.

Bottom line is that you have a baseline to work from, and if you use the same dyno everytime you uppgrade the go fast parts, you will know excactly what the improvements are....which is the bottom line.

Thanks guys. I updated the first post with the dyno sheet. Let me know! If it's hard to read, I'm sure I can blow it up a little bit and re-host it.

Oh, btw: could my IC have anything to do with it? I know it hasn't ever been cleaned over 50k miles of use! I looked in there when I took it off to do my OCC install, and it was SOAKED in oil. I will clean it as soon as I get my M7 OCC. Thanks Peter!

Is there any advice about what kind of Dyno provides more accurate numbers? I've been searching for one locally and haven't found anything yet. Is it expensive to dyno a car?

I think it varies from place to place, but I know they were having a "dyno day" there, and it was $50 for 3 pulls. Usually it's $35 set up and $10/pull.
