Inproved airflow for the AGS...

Hi all, there have been a lot of threads going around about getting colder air into the intake. I've installed an AGS v3, and was looking around the heat shield, and saw ways to improve things.

I was going to make this out of Al sheet, but Home Depot was out (after taking 30 min in hot traffic to get there! Grrr Stock the friggin shelves!) so this one is out of card stock and Al tape. It will be used as a template when I go to sheet Al....

Anyway, it's not much to look at yet... But I think you all will get the idea.....

Matt

Nope....

I'm mike-less....

But I gotta say, I'm glad it covers the whine of the friggin Goodyear serpentine belt. That's coming off next....

I would not want to drive in the rain with that setup. From what I have damaged engines if you drive through deep water that is the snout it enters

That might cause some concern for the 100's of HAI users over the last 18 months if that was true. The HAI filter is in pretty much the same location as ours. Any reports of issues with the HAI as yet ? Just curious.

Nope....

I don't know of anyone whith a HAI who has hydrolocked.

Remember, the AGS filter isn't in a box, so water can drain down.

Also, the stock car has a funnel right at the same location, with no place for water to go (at least large amounts, some of the acustical features can take a bit). While there are more hydrolocked Minis than I care to see, it's still s statistically insignificant number of cars.

First impressions were both better and worse..

Seems like it works..... But I was surprised how hot it got. So today I took it out and insulated it with some felt held on with contact cement. So far, I think the idea is sound.... But it would be better if it were made of plastic or fiberglass...

Thank you Matt....

The hydrolock issue is a non issue as the water would drain right out of the
bottom part of the filter, but if the weather would be hellacious simple duct
tape over the opening would suffice.

I like the funnel idea a lot, and I will see what we can do to add a CF or a fiberglass part to the area to aid proper airflow.
We do have a surprise in less then 30 days (preview at Monterey historics)
this device will help to smooth the air stream in to the the radiator and also allow a high pressure zone above the bumper area,IE, more cool air to the
AGS V.3...

Here's a "crude" version of the same idea...

Note the black diverter riveted to the shroud...been working just great for over a year...

the DFIC really benefits from its dedicated scoop..... maybe the AGS will benefit as greatly with a dedicated air diverter/scoop/funnel

Just got back from a hard run...

and the felt made a world of difference. Now I just have to do a with/without data log to make sure.....

I'm a HAI user! Just my 2 cents....I drove through water that was half way up my rims, raining like crazy, my IC was soaked, etc.....my HAI wasen't even damp. Though I have no information about the AGS system, like Randy said, it's basically in the same location, so I wouldn't suspect water to get to your filter.
