Clutch and LSD

I need some advice. I wanna beef up the car a little either with this M62 package that may be (woohoo) out soon or possibly a twin charge.

At what point should I start looking into upgrading my clutch/flywheel and adding an LSD. Also how do the different clutch and or flywheel units compare? I know Spec and Exedy are both available. Exedy includes the flywheel correct? I just read a blurb about the Exedy Single plate (stage 3??) saying it basicly supports up to 300ft/lb and engages easier than a multi plate unit.

Or am I better to go with a Spec stage whatever and snag a flywheel to compliment.

Thanks all

Seann

PS I did run a search quickly (snuck out of work into office to post tee hee) but did not come up with much.

I am running the Spec stg3 clutch & spec 14lb flywheel & its holds up really well, but I hate the drivability of it around town. Its pretty much like an on off switch when pulling out from a stop even worse on a hill.

I also have the Quafie LSD, that I actually like.

I'll second what Trickle X said: stage 3 plus lightweight fw= PITA on the street, but fun on the autocross course.

cinq-- A quaife install is much cheaper than a whole new tranny. If I remember right I paid ~ $2300 for Quaife/fw/clutch/install. A new tranny is ~$4500. Also, I've seen 2 different factory lsd's fail while autocrossing

What do you think contributes more to the drivability problem, the clutch or the flywheel? Would a less aggressive clutch/lightened flywheel be a better day to day combo, or aggressive clutch/stock flywheel be a better deal?

Yes. Seriuosly, it all comes down to TANSTAFL (there ain't no such thing as a free lunch). It's not that the combo isn't drivable, it's that you have to think about launching all the time. Hills have to be done with the ebrake or you either bog or squeal.

How much ease of driving are you willing to sacrifice to improve performance? Most folks won't need a stage 3 clutch, anyway.

The clutch for sure. I would suggest not getting a real aggressive clutch if you plan on a lot of street driving. -- Johan

Factory LSDs are traditional clutch type prone to wear...Quaife is torque sensing helical gears bathed in trans fluid...little chance of breakage or wear with proper maintance...

It's a combination of both. The lighter flywheel is noticable when pulling out, as the car does bog down to the point you think its going to stall. What I normally do is blip the throttle before I let the clutch out, it helps keep the revs up a lil so the engine doesnt blog, but I always need to think about it. I think with the stage 2 clutch it would let you ease it out a bit better, but you still would have the issue with the flywheel bogging a bit.

If I had it to do again, I would go with the stage 2. Although I dont know how well it would hold up to the TC power. I went on the decision of better safe than sorry, but if you dont need stage 3, skip it. If you think u may someday go to a tc, then I still recommend skipping it. The only reason I felt I had to, was because I already had the turbo sitting in my garage waiting for me to install it.
