Bent rim, or out of round tire. You could also have suspension damage of some sort.

You have stock tires/rims or aftermarket?

Maybe you have a warped brake rotor, or two!

Sounds like you have a wheel! (I hope I'm wrong)

You should find a tire place that has a "road force balancer". It will tell you if you have a bad tire.

Otherwise I'd check for worn tie-rods. How many miles does the car have on it?

Yeah balance those tires/rims. This is often an area where vibration takes place.

24,000 miles on her .....i just had the dealership balance rotate and align ... maybe they missed this ...also the brakes were just done .and i think they would have seen suspension damage while doing the breaks...thanks for all the info everyone

If you mean that sometimes the steering wheel seems to pull itself to either side, it may be the runflat tires. I believe it's called tramlining, as someone already posted above. I used to think there was a problem with the power steering motor since it often happened while going over uneven surfaces like heat-ruts on highways. Then I switched to non-runflats and the problem disappeared entirely.

Wow, that is nuts! When you turn the steering wheel, do the wheels turn as much as they should? And when the steering wheel moves by itself, how much play are you talking about? Is it just a few degrees or is it from, say, 12 o'clock to 11 and 1?
