Well... It found me peace, but it's still looking for the satellites :impatient

 

The first time you start one up it can take a while for it to initialize. After that, it should find the satellites pretty quickly. . .

 

I used one very similar to that this summer, it was great!

 

Just how realiable are those things?

 

It got my brother and I back from Colorado to Michigan no trouble at all! It even told you how far the closest gas station and lodging were!

 

To acquire satellites you’ll have to set the region you are located in so the GPS knows what ones to look at. It should be part of the initial setup of the GPS. Once set you will never have to change it unless to take it to a different region of the world. It may take a bit before it locates them the first time but after that should find then in a minute or less.

 

My Garmin 2610 allowed me to eliminate Yahoo/Mapquest printouts and to get rid of tons of maps for my cross-country roadtrip last year. It is fantastic!

 

I have a Magellen in my car and a Lowrance on my motorcycle. Both work great. Just enter the address of your destination and it will tell you how to get there. You can even program them to avoid toll roads, interstates, use shortest distance or shortest time... I like both of mine.

Both also will locate points of intersest, like gas stations and restaurants (sorted by distance or type).

I did not have to program anything with the satelites. I just turned them on and they found the current location.

I got a Garmin StreetPilot i5 (http://www.garmin.com/products/spi5/) for my wife. It is slick! This is truely a marriage savior. I am no longer wrong when the directions are not correct.

I did set the voice for the British accent. My wife calls the thing Ms. Garmin when talking about it.

The only down side I found is that I have not found a "mark this spot" button. This would be useful if I am out in the middle of no where and wanted to get back to the same spot. It may be in the program and I have just not found it yet.

I love my Garmin, but you do still have to take caution. It once sent me down a one way street the wrong way. But in its defence the street was one way only from 5:00 p.m. until 5:00 a.m.

 

I got mine for the fact that I can plug her into a spot wedged under the tach and on top of the steering column. And it pretty much did all I needed it to do. I can't get the dinking thing to work off my Mac (even with SoftWIndows running) but I have a PC around that does the job so.



Now to hook it into the sound system and power and I'm 100%.
By the way, I call her "Moneypenny". And yeah, I almost went into a one way in San Fran. Not good. It's also good to keep the freshest maps on it, as it had me positioned about 50' off a bridge that was "moved" last year. Thought my MINI was running on water!!
