Start by going through the vender directory here on NAM.

https://www.northamericanmotoring.com/sponsors

Depending on where you live, consider talking to a place that does vinyl graphics for commercial vehicles... (google search)

Check out Aesthetic Creations and Cooper Flags (they are in the Vendor Directory)

Aesthetic Creations did my entire MINI.

The only negative I've heard on roof graphics is the life. If you have a sunroof and are going to use the perferated, it has a limited life. It was designed to go on the side of buses, vans, etc. that do not get direct UV from the sun. With the vinyl on the top it will get direct UV constantly. The solid vinyl is supposed to be much better.

Okay. Fine. I'll be the sarcastic one...

but I have to say that it's mighty wearing on ones soul.

Look, when I need info on the web I use a search engine first. Usually I find what I need. I think it's only proper that a person search for themselves first before they go and post on a forum asking for others to do the work for them. Now if you did search first then you should say so. It's the polite thing to do. If the internet is one thing it's a place for lazy people to get what they want by using others good natured personalities to do it for them. Common sense, hard work and consideration are three things you rarely come upon any more(eg: I need a checkered roof. Where could i get them, and what are my options?). More like a demand than asking politely for assistance. Would have been much nicer(a nasty word for some) to say...."Hey all. Tried to find info on buying a checkered decal for my roof, but couldn't find the data I was looking for. Any help would be appreciated."

Of course that wouldn't happen because if they'd done a search they'd have found all the info that would be required to buy one and either have it installed or do it themselves. Now what would that tell us of that person? Some would say they are inventive in getting others to do the work for them. Some might suggest that the person may be handicapped in some way and can only concentrate long enough to form simple thoughts. Still others might guess that the person in question is heading towards the O.R. to perform emergency surgery and needs the answer a.s.a.p. My own quess would be they are just too lazy to do that search for themselves and knowing the generosity of people in general have no problem taking all the shortcuts they can to reach a goal. Now that doesn't make them bad. It's the normal anonymous nature of the internet that allow us to become this way. If that same person were to join an actual live group and asked in that manner they'd likely be told to shove off.

It amazes me that so many allow bad manners to proliferate in the internet. You may not agree with me. Hell likely you don't. But the next time some person flips you off in traffic remember they're just like the person on the internet demanding answers to their questions. They either don't know the proper way to ask, or just don't care. They are the only one that matters. They need a really good smack upside the head. And it should have been done when they were much younger.

Rant complete. Need more coffee. Anyone know where to get someone to make and deliver it to me? Black. No cream or sugar. I'm way too sweet at it is.

Can i get some of that coffee fred3?
I agree, but some people just aren't as internet literate as others.
Anyway, motorsports_3 try a local sign shop that uses vinyl. I have a guy in my area that is awesome...

He striped my Dark Silver car too! Check my gallery

Are the dealers more expensive? Does anyone know if the dealer vinyl holds up differently than what the NAM venders use?

I imagine you would have forgot all about it by the time either one deteriorates. I have seen a CooperFlags checkerboard roof on a MINI and it looks nice, but there is a big seam where the pieces overlap.
Remember, the dealer installed one is being put on by auto technician, not someone who does it for a living.

and the dealer will also back up their labor, materials, and workmanship for a year, which is something I did not receive when my perforated sunroof flag deteriorated in 6 months. . . This is why I would only do a solid vinyl design in the future instead of anything that is printed to go on the roof. Solid vinyl will last for years.

If you use a reputable sign/graphic shop they should back up their work. I have solid vinyl on mine. The black squares are all individual, as are the white ones on the sunroof glass.

AC did mine. The while roof (and sunroof piece if solid) were one piece of vinyl. Put the whole thing on as one and then cut it out where needed. Now I have a perforated piece for the sunroof (not installed yet - right now it is solid) and that is a seperate piece - but it is a solid piece.

I talked to a local shop yesterday about a checkered roof for my MINI. I have the black roof and am wanting a BRG/B checkered roof. Since my roof is black already, they mentioned only putting on BRG checks and leaving the roof be the other part. Is this the best method or would a whole roof cover be the best route?

I'm looking for it to last years. If it does fade, I want it to be easy to replace or remove. Also, how thick is this stuff? The reason I ask is if I do go with the black roof being a check, I will have to wax it and I would prefer not to have tons of wax lines at each edge of the brg checks.

The ones that cover the whole roof are printed, and some folks will say that printed doesn't last as long as solid color vinyl. If you just put the squares on it would be solid color vinyl......Can they match the BRG pretty well (it won't be metallic like your car, right?)? I see your point about all the little edges though........now I am not sure what to think...

Im sorry that i had to make the almighty take a moment and make a primarily usless post in my topic. If you need post counts do it somewhere else. Im sorry to anyone if they thought it was demanding, but it seemed to only bother you Fred. For your info i checked the vender search and only found some ugly 3d checker board graphics, and other ones. Sorry for asking for some kindness, that when i cant find something to ask for help from a community, like NAM is supposed to be. When ever i am reading a post, and i know the answer wheather or not the person did a search i answer it, because i enjoy helping fellow comunity members. It is people like you that make forums non enjoyable. So please if you have a problem with my post, or it offends you, just pass it on, go to another one. If it bothers you that much, do what you are supposed to do and PM me.

Thanks to the other people who posted. I am conidering the OEM one.

best choice BY FAR......www.idlegear.co.uk yes yes its in the UK, but there are 4 reasons they are the best.

1. Shipping is just as fast as the US companies
2. LOOK AT THAT PRICE
3. It is made much differently than the usual full roof checker roof in order to make it easier to apply yourself (saves you more money because you dont have to pay to get it installed)
4. See below....its looks good

NOT TRUE in all cases.

My dealer outsources ALL his vinyl work to a small company that specializes in vinyl work and the guy is superb.

And he does do it for a living. In fact, now, we just go to our vinyl guy and bypass the dealer.

  1. The MINI checks are single color Checks
  2. Fading is an issue over time. Unfortunately, the enemy is the Sun. The sun bakes it on and after time it can be more difficult to get it off. The only frame of reference i have is that we had side stripes on for 5 months and they came off easy ... but they dont get direct sun.
  3. Wax isnt an issue. Keeping the water spots off can be. Someone suggested 303 that might help.

I'm going to have to give Idle Gear a try. Thanks RallyMINI

I've been looking for a PW check to go on my black roof for months. Looks like they might be able to make one. No way I'd ever put a white check up there

If the dealer sends it out to be done, then it's not dealer installed. It's called a sublet, and then charge you twice as much.
