Drivetrain 05/06 tranny for a real improvement
05/06 tranny for a real improvement
I've had occasion to drive a stock 05 & 06 MCS. Man, the tranny makes a huge difference!
With all the mods I have now, it'd cost really big bucks to equal the tranny difference. Is there a way to incorporate it for an 02, 03, 04?
For instance, a different final drive gear? I have a Quaife and I've heard rumors of a more favorable drive gear from the Quaife, although expensive. But so far, only rumors.
I've read the thread about dropping in the 05 tranny, but to date it's a bit inconclusive as to whether it's a direct drop-in, with no side effects. The local BMW/MINI dealer is clueless.
Although I won't do it at the price, $2700 for the tranny, less $500 for the old one on e-Bay, yields $2200 plus labor. Finding a salvaged 05/06 unit would be interesting, to say the least.
I can't think of any equivalent expense engine mods that'll equal the 05 tranny (Already have M7-16%/Alta-3% pulleys, GRS IC, M7 throttle body 400cc injectors, etc, plus Miltek header and exhaust and much more).
Frankly, I doubt that a new head, cam and SC porting would approach the increased torque and throttle response of the 05 tranny gearing.
So how to get there?

I know this is a really cheap answer, and probably not one you like, but if you're going to spend $3000-$4000 just to put a new transmission in, you might want to consider getting a 05/06 MCS?

So it's maybe $500-800 plus labor. Can't see any engine mods that would produce nearly the same results.
Already have 15 x7 lightweight wheels & 205/50-15 tires for lower unsprung weight and lower gearing, but it still doesn't compare to the 05 tranny.
I have way too many mods to be able to sell the car without taking a bath. Was hoping someone would have an idea if this was do-able without complications.
The straight cut gear option isn't streetable enough.
Spider-X, why don't YOU try it? That way, since we're both in Atlanta, I could check out the results...

Do you know if they were mostly new or salvaged?
Is here a way to reduce the new price? My local dealer has stopped accepting the BMW CCA membership card for discounts on parts.
Thanks!

Really, when I put my 15 x 6.5 x 38, w 205/55-15 tires on I'm traction challenged. Those tires are old though, going wider and lower next set. There is a BIG difference. Have you seen the talk about the ford SVT sharing the same transmission? Are the ratios between gears different?

My point is that any more engine mods at this point would seem to be more costly and with less bang for the buck than the 05 tranny.
Guess I don't have the facts at hand on the Ford transmission. I'll have to check it out.

I think the ones he has done so far were salvaged. He actually put a 6 spd in a Cooper last summer .
