200 WHP is it possible?

OK I have been talked out of it. Now I have a more realistic goal of say 140-150 hp

Thanks in advance
More power to you But you needn't worry about respect...you have a Mini after all

I guess I should borrow the term "All Motor" from the import drag racers.

I'm no engine expert, but to get 200WHP (~230BHP), you'd have to get almost 144HP/Liter. Can it be done? Sure - just ask professional engine builders. With the MINI block? Maybe. Will it be suitable for a daily driver? Nope. Could you buy another car with the money it would take? Maybe. Just look at Honda - in the S2000 they made history by producing a 100HP/Liter production engine. And it made that at 8000rpm!

Even the S folks have to work hard (aka spend $$) to get 200WHP!
You've already posted to this thread, so you know the challenges.

But hey, mod away and enjoy yourself!
BTW, this S owner respects the Cooper. It just doesn't have as much HP.

Just build it to rev to 10k rpm or so, and you're set!

I love a challenge and hate to be told "no" but unless you are just fixated......I would sell your Cooper and buy a used "S". I think you are in for one very expensive experience......this is one I would walk away from. "Pick your battles carefully" - paraphrase from the "The Art of War" Sun Tzu

wouldn't it be easier to swap a S2000 engine in there instead of doing so much R&D?

its next to impossible to extract that much power from the MINI block it seems, you will need a LOT of revs to burn enough fuel for 200 hp.

But the satisfaction of creating a beast beyon normal nature is more than exhillerating..trust me, i thought about it and I would have spent the same ammount on the 200 whp cooper as I would have with my twincharged Coopr S

Here's some hp/liter numbers for you, you would need 125 hp/l to get your 200 out of the 1.6.

300 hp/l any F1 engine
183 hp/l Yamaha YZF-R1
142 hp/l Audi RS4 (turbo)
120 hp/l Honda S2000
112 hp/l Lambo Miura
108 hp/l Ferrari Enzo

So, your number is higher than any production naturally-aspirated car, with a SOHC head in the MINI. Clearly it can be done, with sufficient funds, but possibly not with the MINI engine.

Try www.theoldone.com, ENDYN has experience with the S, but they may be able to help with the Cooper. They take a systems approach to improving power and efficiency.

But make sure you do your homework before you call so that you can clearly communicate what your goals are.

Good luck! Its a worthy goal.

If you are talking a special event / limited use vehicle and have very deep pockets anything is possible. As a reliable form of transportation I don't see it happening.

Yes I admit I was not thinking clearly when I started this thread.

Now I am thinking more realistic... Say 140 - 150BHP

Your quest is now a lot more reasonable . The motor should be able to get to that range but we hear some bad things about the tranny etc with modded Coopers. Be sure to look into that area as well and good luck.

I think it's possible, and without any blowers. The answer lies in fabrication and patience and about $15000.

I know you're getting impatient, so here you go: lift the engine from an RX-8. 238BHP in 1.3L.

The lion's share of the money will go into making that engine work in a MINI, but you'd wind up with space left over.

Even you S drivers would have to admit: that would be one beast of a sleeper.

That would be swaping a torkless motor for another torkless motor.

I will just be happy to get in the 140-150 BHP range

Good Dr.

200 Whp on a naturally aspirated MC? No forced induction allowed? Very difficult, and most definitely not streetable if acheived. If you'd bore the engine out to 2.2 or 2.3 ltrs. maybe, but then it wouldn't be an MC. Cost wise it wouldn't be worth it, not with cheap forced induction available in the MCS. The MC is all about finesse, and the delicate way to acheive power/traction. Good luck going for 200.

Really? Do you currently have 159 lb-ft of torque? Do you know of any stock S that does?

OK I have dialed back to say 140-150 as a goal.

I don't understand why MINI is limiting itself to 1.6 liters. 2.0 liters seems to be the standard for competition. FIA World Rally and many Touring car formulas. Bore it out, Stroke it a little I mean the parent company is Bavarian MOTOR Works. I guess the truth is that BMW doesn't want the 3 series to be spanked by its little cousin.

I doubt you will get there without some agressive internal mods. If you get agresive on the mods, you might end up with something that is not very streetable or has good driveability. I would look into a cam, xtrude honing and porting of the head, intake and exhaust... some of these components might already be optimized or close to it.. its going to take several mods to make it to your goal... like I said.... if you do get there.. it might not have the driveability needed for everyday driving...

i remember one of the sponsors i think it was mini pilo that said the mini's engine cannot be bored due to space problems...

140-150 hp.. u really need to do EVERYTHING imaginable to achieve that... even then.. i'd think probably a CAI, Full STRAIGHT exhaust, fully done head, tb, cams, chip... i think you should get 140-150 hp
