NAV system owners in the Carolinas

Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone in the Charlotte Chapter or WS or Hickory who has a NAV system has upgraded theirs to the most recent version. If so, do you have a DVD/CD I could borrow/buy. Thanks!

Mark, may I assume you mean the NAV OS upgrade?

..or are you asking for the map disk from NAVTEQ?

YES! Sorry I was not clear. Was reading the posts on NAM about the newer versions (no more ACCEPT screen, smoother graphics, possibly a change to the British voice) and just do not have the hardware to get this done.

How was the dinner last night? Good turn out?

One other thought for the club... as I drive and park around town, I see other Mini Coopers... It would be awesome to fold up a piece of paper with an invitation to check out the club and place it under their wiper blades. Does anyone have anything already made up?

Thanks

Mark

Sure thing Mark. The dealer can flash your system and update your NAV to the latest edition. Hendrick I know has the latest edition. Voice hacks would be something else and I strongly recommend NOT doing the removal of the accept screen.
If you drop in to the dealer (Hendrick and Century for sure) you'll find 'You've been spotted!' cards for just the idea you mentioned. Grab a few!

Steve...

Hope you are doing OK. I believe my NAV had the same problem as yours, oh well, now I can hear my British Lady speaking to me at every turn!

I tried to get Hendrick to "flash" the system upgrade on my NAV system to get the updated version that you recommended. They would not do it for my car, stating that it caused a severe malfunction and deteriorated the NAV unit. They continued to say that it was not even a MINI update and was not approved by BMW/Mini. Did you have problems with the new update? Are they resolved? Would you recommend I try another dealer for this? Do you still have the update on your NAV? Thanks.

Steve,

You wrote you "strongly" suggest not doing away with the accept screen. I have not heard that it was anything other than part of an update... I really get annoyed having to press accept EVERY time. I would love to not have to do that.

Thanks for the tip on the "you've been spotted" cards! I need a few of them and want to get a magnetic M2C2 badge for next to my plate.

Dave,

Sounds like you have tweaked yours to the British Voice - which I am after and would love to do at a meeting in the future - or just pay ya for a copy of the disk! May I ask what version you have?

Later... Mark

Well this may be related to some difficulties I had with my voice not working on my NAV. Hendrick resolved the problem during a service call and then flashed the NAV computer for me at my request... and it failed! Just *blip* and it was dead! Fortunately they had brought in a replacement unit in case the voice failure problem could not be resolved, so they swapped it out with the new one. They flashed the replacement, no problems and I drove away with the updated edition (along with a bunch of other items I had purchased!!) It's possible that they are seeing more of these failures and that mine was not an isolated unit, and have since decided not to perform the flash.

Next note: The facory replacement unit was the one configured like my '04 that provided USA-French-Espanol instead of the '05 configuration with USA-British-German. So once I had the replacement NAV and it was flashed to the latest software, I had a USA voice.

Having done the voice edit on the '04, I made one up with the new software and replaced the USA voice with our luvly (sic) British voice and reflashed it without problem. Long and short, I'd be happy to share the 'voice changed' CD with any of our club members. It's a 5 minute job to have the new system... and well worth it this time I think!

Mark, anytime, happy to give you a copy.

Also, my cautionary note regarding the 'accept' screen is this: To get it in this mode, the system has to be forced in to it through multiple flashes (go up a version, back a version and then back up if I remember the sequence properly) this appears to put it in a 'no country mode' and the only way to reset the computer from there is to take it to the dealer for service ($$$) according to all the postings I've read over the past couple years. RISKY!

Hey.

Well...I have been trying to get the voice going ever since I purchased the vehicle. Hendrick replaced out the NAV unit itself and that did not fix the problem (I was not getting any sound out of the NAV). At that point the language options were 1) British Voice 2) American Voice 3) Spanish. After they replaced out my NAV unit, I was given the options of 1) UK 2) French 3) German. Like I stated, I still could not get the voice even after they replaced out the unit. I was just at Hendrick last week and they figured out that the problem with the voice had something to do with the wiring between the head unit and the AUX input.

Well, after giving you all the dribble, my British Lady now speaks, but I believeI have a european spec unit under my passenger seat. I don't think it has anything to do with the disk, but I could be wrong! The disk I have is from 2003-2 and the software version on the NAV is 4-1/50. Does that match with your specs?

Steve,

Are you having problems with you car stalling while idleing in the morn?

Understood on the no-voice. There appears to be two wires that should be moved when an AUX jack is installed in a NAV-equipped car to get the voice. Glad yours is speaking to you once again. I though perhaps she was just sulking

Software version I'm running is the 1/60 edition that added all the improved visuals and the ability to had a vehicle-pointing orientation and keep the car icon in the center of the screen...

The stalling problem is one often reported in various sites, and seemed to have been associated with certain combinations of the car's ECU version (beats me what mine is) and aggravated by choice of fuel. Seems that gas from some stations in the summer create a problem while others do not. I use mostly Shell and BP and have had no issues with the current '05. I had problems of garage stall-out when starting occasionally with the '04 until I had an ECU update during a service call and the problem mostly disappeared. The car would low-idel still occasionaly, but no stalling.

Hope it helps.
