MC short shift & exhaust fitment problems?
MC short shift & exhaust fitment problems?
I'm not in a hurry to mod my '05 Cooper, but I'm pretty sure that, in due time, I'll do an exhaust and a short shift kit. I'm just curious if the MC foks have run into any of the fitment issues that the S people have had:
So far the Milltek exhaust is my #1 choice, so I'm hoping that it won't interfere with a short shift.
My other question regards the dust cover, which I absolutely want to retain (I think of it as a winter airborne salt shield). Is the B&M the only kit that allows for use of the dust cover? It sounds like the Alta system extends a lot lower, and doesn't allow a dust cover to be used. What about Helix or anything else out there? I had the B&M kit on my '03 Cooper, and after about 15,000 miles it stiffened to a point that I don't want to replicate on my new car.
Thanks!

The Miltek has a very large center pipe resonator. The combination of the large resonator and metal dust cover caused the exhaust to rub on the heat shield causing a LOUD vibration so I had to remove the dust cover. Even then I still had clearance issues. I had to fab up some spacers to put between the center exhaust mounting plate and the frame. This has taken care of the issue. I needed about ½ inch of clearance even without the metal dust cover. Needless to say I’m not going to use the dust cover which is a shame because it is a nice feature of the B&M kit. Don’t know if the Alta short shift kit would have similar issues but if your thinking of installing a Miltek exhaust with a short shift kit you may have some fitment issues that will need to be addressed.

Even after I removed the dust cover and pushed the heat shield back in place as far as it would go with out touching the lowered shifter shaft it still came in contact enough to feel the exhaust moving a bit while driving and you could hear vibration/resonance coming from the exhaust system. But some aluminum spacers like I used in the rear to clear the aero kit rear bumper all is well.
