JCW Brakes vs. 16" Wheels

Specific: Will the JCW brakes clear my 16" Kosei K1 Racing wheels?

General: Is there any easy way to tell if a specific wheel will clear the JCW brakes?

Thx.

As of the date of this response, JCW/MINI/BMW have not published a fit template for the JCW Sport Brake kit. Net, net, you are on your own. If you know someone who has the JCW Sport Brake kit on their MINI and you are on good terms with them, you could do a fit check by attempting to mount your wheels on your friends MINI.

It would be nice to have a sticky where members that have been able to successfully fit their wheels to the JCW Sport Brake kit could post, but absent such a resource, you are left with trial and error.

See http://motoringfile.com/2005/03/18/t...hat_wheels_fit
This will answer for MINI wheels but not aftermarket.

Which was the reason for the suggestion of a sticky where members who had succesfully fitted wheels to the JCW Sport Brake kit could post about their success.

Well...this information is handy but not necessarily up to date. There have been posts of folks successfully mounting the 16" X-Lites without spacers. The proposed sticky is a great idea for aftermarket AND factory wheels.

When we test fit A JCW we didnt see it being a fit issue with our wheels. I doubt you'll have complications compaired to a MCs.

Alex, now I am confused. Are you saying there are no fit issues with the JCW Sport Brake kit and any of the wheels that Tirerack sells for the MINI? Even the 15 inch wheels? Or, just the 16 inch and up wheels? And that no spacers are required to clear the caliper?

The Kosei K1's definitely fit over the JCW brakes and here are the pics to prove it. Alex from Tirerack was informed of this as well.

I wish that these posts had a date stamp. I still need a JCW big brake car to testfit. This post was orinally before the special JCW brakes came out - in the 1st year of JCW - when brakes were unchanged.

I still need a JCW car to fit - good deal on wheels comming if you can bring me a car!

X-lites fit but are not recommended by MINI due to the design of the wheel and the space they leave for the brakes and subsequent cooling issues. I spoke to someone at MINI USA recently about this and he confirmed that this was based on testing by BMW.

Alex,

Have you tried calling your nearest MINI dealership, to see if they have any factory JCWs you can do a test fit with? They should be more common now.

I would love to help you, but driving to Indiana from Virginia to do it would be a bit... inconvenient.

If a JCW car come thru my local delaer we'll get to fit it BEFORE its even deivered to its owner. Haven't had the chance yet to due so. I am trying to make someone a killer deal on wheels, to bring me a test fit. I have been looking for over 1/2 a year with no takers.

My (kind of) local MINI dealer has a JCW equipped car on their showroom floor with X-lites and the brake kit. I took a good look at it.

Spoke clearance is not an issue; I'd guess there was greater than a 1/2 to 3/4 inch there. To my eyes, the concern is how close the caliper comes to the rim. It is very tight and I'd be suprised if there was more than 1/8 inch or so of clearance. I could only imagine a stone getting jammed in there!

I have emailed JCW several times and tried asking for a template on different forums and the answer is always NO. For some reason JCW just won't release this information.

Thats the exact issue we have encountered. So when the 1st lucky Midwesterner brings me his JCW car - he'll get SPECIAL pricing on the wheels of his choice.

Bob S brought me a car, and now we've fit a JCW filter. This will be available on Tirerack.com and on NAM's upgrade garage within a week. Call me to place orders - or inquire early!

When do you think the filter will be up? Also, the site is missing the MCS option as well - just has Cooper, Cooper convertible and MCS convertible. I have a JCW MCS sitting on the docks waiting to picked up. I want to order a set of tires and wheels for it and am curious about the 16" options with the JCW brakes. Let me know.

ALEX -

As soon as I settle on what autocross class to run with my new JCW MCS, I too intend to call you about 2 sets of recommended 16" wheels AND tires (one set for auto-x/DE use, one for street use).

STX class is the most likely target, so SSR or Kosei's or some other lightweight 16x7.5's will be of specific interest.

If the SSR's work with these brakes and are about to disappear from stock for good, please PM me !!

Thanks!
