Are you happy with your ignition upgrades?

Was looking at some of the ignition upgrades and I understand that you don't gain any hp but seems like an okay upgrade. Have you guys been happy or let down from you ignition upgrades? Can you tell any differences? Which upgrade did you do? Thanks

If you find ANY ignition upgrade, like different wires, that have proven emperical data (like a dyno test) that it increases HP, please POST.

You NEED cooler plugs. I did the Pilo Coil-Pak and some plug wires, and I can't really tell any difference there. But the plugs do help. Look at the Mini build up in European Car. (Search in the web, they've done a couple of Mini builds). In general, better ignition helps when you've done stuff to the motor that reqire hotter spark, or cooler plugs (from increased boost or compression).

Others may feel differently...

Some of the upgrades will be Pulley, Head, Cam, Exhaust, Intake, throttle body, injectors. I'm looking at the ignition upgrade but maybe just some Denso IK22's will work fine.

DON't FLASH WITH JCW

See the following threads. The gist is that while your care may feel smoother...the dyno shows these folks loosing 10hp from JCW software in the absense of the JCW kit.

I have the Pilo coil pack and Nology wires. Randy Webb says that the Nology wires actually make 1-2 HP. My engine runs amazingly smooth from 4-6K and pulls like hell to the rev limiter. What contribution the coil pack and wires are mAKING i'M not sure but I'm not taking them off to find out.

And im one of those folks that lost the 10 hp top end. Currently running the 19% pulley, screaming demon coil, ik22 plugs and the live wires.. have done several dyno runs. with different programming and injectors

15% pulley - 158 whp stock programming stock injectors
19% pulley - 172 whp stock programming stock injectors
19% pulley - 178 whp MTH programming Stock injectors
19% pulley - 166 whp JCW programming with JCW injectors
(figure identical to 178 run all the way to 5k then flaten at 166hp)
19% pulley - 185 whp Basic MTH programming with JCW injectors
19% pulley - 198 whp basic MTH programming, GTT TMIC, GTT intake, JCW injectors and slight tunning (still have room to go for more) using the SAFC II
19% pulley - 207whp same as above but using cheater Rims and tires and water cooling for the TMIC

Cheater rims and Tires wiegh in at 20lbs per rim and tire . instead of the reg 38lbs per rim and tire use on all other runs. The water cooling gave an extra 3 hp for the 3 pulls done that day.

Runs were not done on the same day or year for that matter. only thing i can say is the day was sunny for each.. temp according to Gauge on Tach was 72-73 for all the runs. the Last two were on same day total of 3 runs. 198whp was as is, 204 whp right after putting on the Cheater rims, 207whp using a chem sprayer to cool the TMIC. Allow car to cool 20min between runs and to switch rims from 1st and second run.

Mugami, do you think there would be any HP benefit of running larger injectors (like the Helix 380s or the JCW units) with an MCS with -15% and AmD ECU upgrade?

Kingsborne Hurray!

I was very skeptical of plug wire upgrade, after reading a number of threads on the subject.

So I just installed some Kingsborne plugs and wow. My engine runs sooo much better, I cannot believe it. Definately more torque off the line, engine also just runs feels like it is really running strong at an idle. Maybe it is the mods I already have with the plug wires, or what I am not sure, but I am thrilled.

So far my cold start problem may have gone away!!?!?!?!? Only 4 morning starts so far...we will monitor this.

I have an '05 with a 15% pulley and an Alta CAI. I just upgraded the ignition with Magnecor wires, IK22's and a Pilo pack and the car is smoother, but as far as a "mod" other things are a better bang / more enjoyable for the buck. I just wanted to go with the cooler plugs because of the pulley and just went anhead and upgraded the whole thing. If you have some extra cash laying around go for it, but for the same money, I'd rather have a rear swaybar.

I talked to my friend about an aftermarket ignition system. He's a big subie nut, and said that most subie guys use their stock ignition systems upto 500 or so HP. He said the stock ignition is really solid in the WRX, and while I dont know how good the stock ignition system is for the mini, it just seems like a last resort mod...when you dont have anything else to spend money on...
