R50/53 Warranty Question
Warranty Question
What are the scheduled warranty services for MINIs that every MINI dealer MUST honor, no matter what dealer you visit? The ones they must give you regardless of miles on your MINI, even if the service computer has been reset?
Here’s a hypothetical question to this.
Let’s say you buy a NEW MINI and also pay for the 45,000/5Year warranty at purchase time in your purchase contract. You only drive few miles during the week, but do many long distance road trips throughout the year. Can any dealer refuse your warranty for the 25K major inspection and service on these grounds?

Can any MINI dealer refuse you the 25K service you are guarantied by MINIUSA and if so WHY.
sndwave is asking this on my behalf.
I drive cross-country, piling on the miles, every spring. I had Inspection I June 12, 2004, at about 32,000 miles.
I'm just about out of warranty at 47,920+ miles, so I took Wanda in for servicing, asking that they give her Inspection II. My request was denied because the prompter shows 3500 until next service.
When I said it was my understanding that I was entitled to a service every year, the service writer said that was for oil service only, so I had her oil changed.
They also (hopefully) repaired the interior passenger doorhandle, which has been "fixed" 4-5 times, replaced twice. The service writer's comment about this recurring issue: "yeah, it's a bad design; you're not the only one with this problem....."
I also had them verify that my auto-dimming rearview mirror is faulty, and they've ordered it and will install it for me.
I guess I should have driven Wanda hard, but that is not my style except for some VERY spirited driving on The Dragon for a couple days each May.
So, my suggestion to others is DRIVE YOUR MINIs HARD so you make the prompter show service intervals sooner, rather than later.

Where's my key?
Who got my key?
Who?
Oh, here it is ... sweet little key is always in my pocket!
Muaaahhhhh
I need to check the manual, but I would think it would depend on how Inspection II is listed in the manual, if it give a mile listing.
Was Inspection I done later than it should have been?
As for driving hard, my wife and I went through the Phil Wicks driving school last weekend and our oil service interval actually went up. The first oil change won't be until past 10,000 miles.

So my first scheduled oil change was WAAAAY beyond 10,000 miles, at 13.2K, as stated above.
When I suggest driving harder, I mean all the time. Rev it up, redline it, max it out, toss it about, all with safety in mind, of course! But drive it hard enough that you can get the Inspections I and II done under warranty!

That bites, Clo. It would really suck to have to pay for Inspection II (which you attempted to pay for with the extended warrantee) because the computer doesn't think you need it. Apparently there is no 'wallet sensor' in the OBD2 diagnostics!
Mine's gonna work out such that I won't get another oil service before 36K miles (at 27K, and it said 5K at 22K, now says 1,700 miles...)
Maybe if you start the car up and drive around the block a few hundred times you can work down that number??

It is my understanding, that covered maint is only done by the computer interval. If you want the oil changed more often you pay, if you want something done early you pay. If the computer says it ain't time, but you want it done, you pay.

Why not just say, "Drive like Earl drives!!"?
(except for the tickets).Earl
What is the point of Inspection II anyways? This may sound like a dumb question, but I don't quite see the reason for inspections like these, as my experience with cars has been to wait till:
a light goes on
a funny noise is heard and doesn't go away
something falls off
the car bursts into flames
Granted, the last one never happened. But still, what does Inspection II do for the driver/car?

"BMW Mini Cooper
22 March 2005
Ian Palmer decided to buy his daughter, Roxanne, a second hand 2002 BMW
Mini Cooper for her 17th birthday. He bought it from a flagship BMW dealer
in Surrey. The car had just 22,000 miles on the clock and Ian was assured
it was fully tested and every bit as good as a brand new vehicle. It ran
well for three months, but then the gearbox failed. BMW took the car away
and carried out repairs.
Six months later, Roxanne was driving home from a party with her friend
Leone. They arrived home, parked the Mini on the drive and went inside.
Just two minutes later there was an enormous bang. The mini, without any
warning, had caught fire. When the Fire Brigade arrived, it took them two
hours to put the blaze out.
"My daughter could have died", says Sue Palmer, Roxanne's mum. "I'm so
relieved that nobody was hurt. But when we actually got on to BMW, they
just didn't want to know." It took BMW four days to return Ian's calls.
When they finally got in touch, they refused to provide a replacement
vehicle. "All they wanted to do was take the car away from our premises."
says Ian, "And I refused."
Ian's insurers arranged to have the car forensically examined, in
conjunction with BMW. The fire was so severe, they could not 100 per cent
say what caused it. But it pointed to an electrical fault, possibly dating
back to the gearbox work BMW carried out 3 months before. The only thing
that was certain was that it had not been caused by human error. The
Palmers were blameless.
Despite this, BMW refused to do anything, saying that because the report
was inconclusive, there was nothing they could do. The Palmers were
incensed. Ian told us, "I could not believe a major car manufacturer would
not only try and wash their hands of it and admit no liability whatsoever,
but there was no note of regret, nothing. But the implications of what
happened to that vehicle are mind bogglingly frightening."
BMW have now agreed to re-examine the Palmer's Mini. They say they take
such incidents seriously and asks any Mini owner with a similar experience
to contact their dealer or Mini UK on 0870 50 50 125."
Watch out out there!!!!
