Hankook Ventus R-S2 Z212

Has anyone tried these? I am eyeing a bundle at Edge Racing. They say the Hankook is meant to be a direct competitor for the Falken Azeni. I like the hard-to-find size 215/45/16 and I like the price, but don't know anything about the tire. I had two sets of Kumho Supra Ecsta's on my Golf and wasn't very pleased with them (first set had some air issues and the second had horrible wear), so if this is just another "discount" tire for the track, no thanks. Anyone had any experience or have a good street tire for occasional track use that they are just dying to promote?

I have not tried it but did hear about it from those who autocross as an alternative to the Falken Azenis.

I would not expect miracles but it can be used for street and for autocross. How will it wear? Depends how you drive most likely along with your suspension upgrades and alignment.

Stock alignment will help for street wear, performance alignment with more negative camber will help for performance but wear tires faster if you drive fast alot. Driving on the track with stock camber will also wear your tires fast, even if you don't drive that fast.

Interesting to see them up against the Azenis. It looks like the tires will have completely different attributes, with the Hankook more suited for street (and better for rotation). I find the width/height difference strange, though. If the Azenis are 215 but oversized, shouldn't they be the same size as the Hankooks? I can't imagine why they'd actually be wider than a 225. Weird.

Keep us posted. Thanks.

The size difference is a little weird, but from everybody i've talked to its much been confirmed that its Falken that oversizes the Azenis line a little. Its good for Autocrossing because some classes limit you to 225 or 245 widths so your running a little wider when using Azenis. A friend of mine just got 235 Hankook's on his Sentra SE-R, he's a veteran autocrosser (always kicking my butt) and he says they seem to have a bit more ultimate grip than the Azenis but the sidewalls are very soft which makes the car a little strange on turn in.

I just mounted my Grids with the Hankook's on my new 05' MCS 20 minutes ago and so far so good. I'll give back more info once i get some road time with them.

I'll also try to post some pics soon

This tire has me thinking also. Here's a nice PDF on them:

http://www.hankooktireusa.com/pdf/uploads/Z212.pdf

for the 16-215/45, the diameter is 23.6" and the weight at 20.5 lbs (not mentioned in that doc though). Very nice. Anyone finally rolling with these yet?

EDIT/ADD: These have a tread width of 7.6". Is this the only reason (tread width) why one would go with a wider tire, that is a 215 vs 205? Because if so, I'm going to stay with my current 205's that have a 7.9" tread width, are 23.3" and weigh 19.81 lbs. If there's something else to consider that I'm missing here when wanting to go wider?

Yup, i've been street driving these for almost a week now on my new 05'. I also autocrossed them this past weekend on a Sentra SE-R of a friend of mine. He has 235/40/17's on that car, they grip very well but the sidewalls are a bit mushy so intial turn in is a bit slow.

I have pictures of them on the car i'll try and post them tomorrow.

Thanks Thameth for the follow-up. Pictures are good, but driving impressions, particularly on a MINI, is most sought. Thanks again.

I've been looking at these tires and is seriously considering them as runflat replacements.
I'm curious to know what's the noise factor? any tramline issues?
