Anyone with cold start concerns? -40 and working!

Coldest night this season…-40C (=-40 °F), plugged it in for 3 hours and started up just fine, idled immediately and no issues…other than tires had flat spots that took a few minutes to soften up once the car warmed up and on my way.
No provision for block heater on B48 (or previous N18) so I use an oil pan heater that is bonded to the oil pan. That combined with the belly pan seems to do the job and good to know that warm oil is circulating right away on start-up.
Would highly recommend for those worried about cold temp start-ups. Oh, also have installed a trickle charger, also important.
The -40 was without wind chill…since inanimate things aren’t impacted by wind chill…but was -52 with the wind chill. Freakin’ cold!
Was actually -42, but gauge only goes to -40!

North American made pan heater, comes with glue to bond to the pan.
North American made pan heater, comes with glue to bond to the pan and sealer for the perimeter.

All good…just dress and prepare for it…..summers are awesome and almost 24 hours of daylight….

North of 60, Looking at Google maps where Yellowknife is, I am curious, how far away is the closest Mini dealer.

About 17 hour drive….hence I do any needed work myself, typically in the driveway. Had a 2015 R60 and now 2018 F60…so far I have been able to do everything myself. Am about 62 degrees north latitude, think the same as Juno Alaska, just further east.

I try to prepare for any eventual maintenance, stockpile a few parts based on what I hear of common issues on NAM. No overnight parts here! I want to keep this F60 a while so trying to stay ahead of maintenance….wife does not like the ‘new’ mini look…so keep this one as long as we can. Have also been looking for a low mileage R61 also, but must be JCW and red, and preferably manual….seems to be a rocking horse poop type availability…

We had a couple of -35 deg C days a couple of weeks ago. Car started no worries and I have no oil heaters. 0w20 oil helps.

-42 deg C is simply heroic :-)

I was surprised by some colder than expected weather while at our rustic cabin (no power) last week, temp dipped to -38 C or so…the car did start at that temp….but for the sake of longevity and peace of mind of warm oil going to the top of the motor and turbo…I prefer to plug-in below about -25C (-13F or so) when I can.
