Replace water pump 2014 Cooper S w/ 2L turbo

Good morning.

Apologies if this question has already been answered but I looked and didn't see anything.

My Mini dealer identified a leaking thermostat housing. They want a lot of money to replace it. So I'm looking for a video guide that covers the Cooper S with the 2L turbo B48A20A engine? Lots of guides for the 1.6L engine but none that I can find for the 2L.

mini doesn't sell the thermostat housing separately but third parties do. Any thoughts as to buying just the thermostat housing?

Any help/advise appreciated.
Thanks!

Thanks for that link. I had seen that post and watched the video. The problem is the BMW has so much more space to work with than the Mini so although is was a great video, it just doesn't get me closer to knowing how to change the pump/thermostat housing.

I do have to say that the tech working on the BMW was top notch.

Check this thread:

It is for an F54 JCW, but the engine is similar. He does replace the thermostat along with the oil filter housing, so should give you an idea of what is needed.

I just change my "heat management module" (which replaced the thermostat starting in 2020) last weekend. Even though the part functions a little different, removal and installation is very similar. My advice is take the time to remove the fan shroud. There is VERY little room there and the plastic edges on the shroud are sharp and cut your hands up working in that tight space.

The three bolts on the bottom are very hard to reach and impossible to see without a borescope (which thankfully I had). With the shroud still in place, a socket on a 3" extension is too short and 6" extension is too long. I had to use a 3" extension and a swivel wrapped in tape to reach them. Without the tape the swivel would droop and would not go on the bolt. Removing the fan shroud would have saved time and made the job much easier.

Thanks for the input.

On the 2L engine, the water pump/thermostat is to the left of the crankshaft so I'm not sure why the radiator shroud would need to be removed in this instance unless it's to remove the hoses going to the thermostat housing. Was that the case with your heat management module?

Thanks again for your help

That part of the engine bay is tight against the radiator fan. Removing the fan and shroud allows for more open access.
