Long time listener, first time caller - Newbie stepping in to say hi.

Hi everyone,
Just wanted to jump in and say hello!

I recently picked up a 2005 MCS, 122k miles, with Chrono package and some Dinan pieces put on at some point over it's life. Since I didn't get a lot of history/maintenance deets, I am going to be going through the engine with a fine tooth comb and replacing maintenance items to ensure longer term reliability as well as some other items "while I'm in there". What I was told is that it has a Dinan tune, intake, pulley, injectors, plugs and I think it had a fuel pump swap and maybe a fuel pressure regulator change tied to the Dinan, but have to pull it out to see. H&R springs and Koni struts, resonated magnaflow exhaust and dinan tips. All of that to be verified once I get it on the lift.

Been submerging myself in forums and searching everywhere trying to understand what the car has. I also believe there is a swapped out crankshaft pulley but I can't identify the maker yet until I start to open her up. It's blue, When googling I can only find an ebay pulley called a Blue Underdrive Lightened Crank Pulley and one other reference to maybe an old Alta pulley. So I'll swap it out to an ATI.

For me, I've worked on BMWs primarily for the last couple decades so it's great to see some overlap. I even took my e46 gas cap with me when I bought the car to see if it would kill the evap code it's throwing (P0442). Thought I had it fixed as it made the 6 hour drive home without re-tripping the code, but then it came up again the other day. So more to dig in to. I also had an issue while on the highway when it was 95degrees and I would get a dead throttle (no response to throttle) for about 3-4 seconds and then everything would be fine (happened ongoing during the hottest part of the day, stopped while in the mountains and the air was cooler and then started again when it got back up to 95). So I only had a loss of power, no lights flickering or anything else. Which leads me to wonder about all the forum responses I have read about the Dinan pump/fuel regulator being spotty. So I'll swap out the fuel pump first as the OEM (I've read) will pump enough for what I need. I don't track the car, just a little heavy on the foot around town. :-)

Here are the things I have planned to work on:
Supercharger service with water pump (since I don't know if it's ever been done)
Coolant flush
Swap out the Dinan pulley with another 15% WMW pulley (since I don't know how old the dinan pulley is - it's not causing any issues, but "while I'm in there" and it will give me some piece of mind.)
New belt
ATI Super Damper Crank Pulley
Belt Adjusting Pulley
Belt Tensioner Assembly
Coolant Temp Sensor
CPS O-Ring
Timing Chain/Guides - still need to source a timing chain kit or find a place that rents them.
Valve Cover Gaskets
Oil Pan Gasket
Oil Change
Engine Mount(s)
Tstat and Housing
1 Jack Pad and a partridge in a pear tree.

And if anyone recognizes the car, I'd love to chat with the guy/gal who owned it in NC around 7-8 years ago. I picked it up in Knoxville (he had it 6 years) and then a guy at OutMotoring had it for a year or so, but he got it from someone in NC. And that's where it's back home!

Anyways, back to the grind and good to meet everyone.

Nice.

the Dinan pulley is fine. I would wipe it down, and use purple locktite on the threads - purple is the lightest locking I think. It should never wear out. FCP euro has a tensioner kit with the shorter belt you need. It comes with the idler pulley and some bolts. I just did that and the alternator- my alternator died. If you are in that far, it’s worth $229 + 50 core ( denso rebuilt ). Check the Cat. The press fit loosens up - I welded mine ( a shop did it ). Check the oil filter housing gasket ( you have an e46 ).

Good looking car! I love the grey with black details.
Not so sure about the towing hook though

I'll be pulling the dinan pulley this weekend or next and will see how it looks. Was also trying to figure out it's % as research comes up with multiple posts ranging between 13-15%. I will be changing out the tensioner, idler and belt though. Didn't think about the alternator so I'll check out the steps for that, thanks. I did pick up an oil filter gasket housing as well. Once she's up on the lift I'll be able to go over the exhaust and really understand what it is. When I bought it I heard magnaflow, milltek, dinan and resonator. So we'll see what's there.

Thanks! I've been looking around to see if there is a black-out kit to dechrome pieces (headlight, door handles, trim, etc) but haven't found anything in a package. Just piecemeal. So that will wait until the engine bits are all set. And what do you mean about the towhook?! That's a DINAN towhook worth at least +5HP!! LOL. Ok, maybe not, I just have to look through the box of odds and ends that I got to see if the tow hook cover is in there. If not, it will stay until I can replace the hole in the grill. It's not as bad looking from the front view though. All in due time. :-)

Thanks for the responses guys and good to be back on a car forum after so long.

Everywhere I looked, and I looked a lot - Dinan pulley is 15%. I got the belt from Dinan in 2021 when I did the work. They sent a 1365mm belt. The one I got from FCP is 1374mm. Stock is 1388mm. Way Motor Works has a page with more details. I know the belt that just went on is 9mm longer, but I could not source the shorter one in time. Dinan only sold the rear muffler - not any other exhaust parts.

No time like the present to start breaking her down! And the blue lightweight crank pulley is from Unorthodox Racing, which I didn't see in any of my research. 🤷‍♂️

Congrats on the car. Can't wait to hear your feedback after changing to the ATI as you will notice the car will run smoother.
