So my 2006 R53 has the klunking when turning the steering wheel while its hot in the car. I had spray greased the bearing everyone talks about before but it didn't work. I also had the feeling, when it klunked, the noise was coming from closer to the steering wheel but hey there's nothing else right?
After reading this Fandom page about the klunking noise I thought "lets replace that bearing."
So i pulled the upper steering column assembly and I got welcomed by not one but two bearings! Both are steel open ball bearings, no plastic like the page mentioned. There is a plastic sleeve (the one the fandom photo) that goes over the column into the bearing but that doesn't do bearing things.
The upper steering column assembly Two metal ball bearings. Not one and no plastic either.
Long story short, has anyone replaced both bearings? The top one seems doable but the other seems very hard to access .
