Fuel Pump, Level Sensor or Both?

Hey all. Twelve years into my CMS and I am finally having issues with the Fuel Pump/Level Sensor. I connected my Carista OBDII and it kicked back codes P0461 and P0462 pointing to an issue with the fuel level sending unit.

My question is...is it worth only swapping out the sending unit or should I also swap the entire Fuel pump/Level assembly? The fuel gauge has been erratic for the last few weeks and this past weekend ended up feeling a "soft pedal" on a longer drive along with a few random kicks. I remember having that back in 2010 with my MC hardtop. Turned out the be the fuel pump. I know that is anecdotal but Carista isn't giving me a specific code for the fuel pump itself. At least not while idle.

Thanks

C

When my 2016 CMS started reporting an incorrect level, I replaced the whole in tank unit. Was not a hard job after getting the rear seat out. Never had a problem since,

Mine is doing the same thing with erroneous fuel level and codes. Curious about the cost and process to replace the unit(s)?

This is what I put in

I bought the tool to open it, you can have it if you want (PM me), ill never use it again. To replace, remove the rear passenger seat (4 bolts) there is a cut in the carpet, undo the little lid on the top of the tank and switch out the unit as a whole piece. Was pretty straightforward.

Thank you for that information. Sounds reasonable. There is a special tool? Is this to open the top of the tank where the pump is under?

I have seen videos of using a screwdriver and hammer to remove the locking ring as well

Great stuff. This place is the best for guidance. Never ceases to amaze me the knowledge MINI owners have about their cars

I was able to do the fuel pump replacement this weekend. Thank you to MReiland for the helpful tips and tool!

I was able to clear the P0462 code but the P0461 came back after being reset. Literature is saying it could be a bad sensor, stuck float or a wiring issue/blown fuse. I checked the fuse (#46) and it looks good. Plus the pump is working so it's a good indication the fuse was fine. It's is a new pump so that would indicate the float and the sensor (sender) is good to go.

All that remains would be the wiring, though the pump is working. I am at a bit of a loss.

What is the difference between the P0462 and P0461 codes? Are you still getting weird behavior with the fuel tank level indicator?

I only just swapped the pump yesterday so I am not sure if the level sensor is "correct." The code for that error was P0462. This is what remains after a code reset and scan:

Basic OBD2:
P0461 (Permanent) - Fuel Level Sensor "A" Circuit Range/Performance

Heater & air conditioning:
E738 - Manufacturer-specific code
(tap to search)

Airbags:
93C3 - Seat occupancy detector, passenger

Junction box (passenger) (JBBF):
C914 - Manufacturer-specific code
(tap to search)

I am not concerned about the 93C3 code since I have a bypass module installed for a seat belt sensor error. That triggers the airbag code. Cheaper than replacing the entire seat.

The other two codes are for something in the junction box on the passenger side and a low signal from the TCM. Even though I replaced the pump, I am not wondering if there is an electrical issue. Maybe a faulty relay though I am not experienced enough to say.

Update: I am not sure how I forgot this but I also experience a few mini "bucking" motions are I try hit the gas harder when on the highway. I can get the car up to, say 70mph, without any issue by steadily pressing the gas pedal, but if I try to punch it a little while approaching 2000rpm, I get a few periods of bucking. It's doesn't feel like a transmission. It's almost feels like a power issue. New plugs?

I have the 93C3 code too. I installed a bypass too, and it doesn't work right. Intermittent. Don't know why my 2014 wasn't in the recall for that occupancy sensor issue. What year is your R60? These vehicles have issues with the connections and wiring on top of the sensors...

It's a 2012. The occupancy sensor went about 4 years ago. The bypass worked for me. Haven't had a l passenger seatbelt light since. Fortunately, that code is not a concern this time around.
