R50/53 PFL owners (pre face lift) Need info on revs
PFL owners (pre face lift) Need info on revs
I just picked up my 5th mini, A really clean 05 S in pepper white. It is quite buzzy on the highway and was thinking about a PFL trans (or CWP)
But what I would like to know from PFL owners is what speed are you doing at 3000 RPM in 6th?
I think it best to use a GPS so tire/ wheel size does not fudge the equation.
On my 2005 I am doing 66.7 MPH at 3000 RPM
If this is a significant difference I am considering a PFL box when I do the clutch at some point.
Why oh why did mini not put a OD 6th in the car I will never know.
Thanks,

This should have everything you need to calculate speed and RPM.
Are you running a stock height tire? That seems slow for 3k RPM.

Your speed/rpm matches perfectly with the trans ratios deepgrey posted the link to (assuming stock tire sizes).
My PFL ('03 MCS 6MT) also seem close to those calculations (70 mph @ 3000).
You'll notice the difference in 6th gear ratios between pre/post FL is very small (4.7%, or about 2 mph @ 3k rpm). So you're not going to accomplish much in this regard if you swap the trans.
IIRC correctly, there were some complaints that 1st gear was too tall on PFL cars which supposedly prompted the gear ratio changes. So the difference is most noticeable in lower gears / speeds (if you do the math, you'll see there's a greater percentage difference in the lower gears than the higher gears).

Hmm. I thought I calculated a couple of mph higher for the facelift trans (closer to 69 mph), but maybe I got a tire size or something a bit wrong. Not that I have much experience with the R53.
I do know the numbers match perfectly for my car with my tire size (which isn’t terribly relevant to this discussion). I’m spinning ~3950 rpm at 80 mph.

Fashionably late to the soiree as usual -
'04 prefaceift R53 manual, 17" S-lites, 15% SC pulley,
As noted above: 6th gear, 70mph @3,000rpms
2nd gear, 70mph, @5,800rpms - time to shift!
