2008 Mini Cooper base model fan stays on for 7 minutes after shutdown
I have a 2008 Mini Cooper base model hatchback with a fan issue. I have already replaced the thermostat and bled the system. I've driven the car a few miles every day without losing any coolant. I also replaced the pipe that goes from the thermostat to the water pump, no leaks so far. Everything works fine but the fan stays on for ever. I timed it today and it was almost 8 minutes. I read somewhere that the external temp sensor that's connected to the grill may have something to do with the fan always on. The fan turns on every time I start the vehicle regardless of the ac being on or not and even when the vehicle is cold. Is there any way to test the external temp sensor or wiring and also the relay for the fan? I'm guessing the relay is working because if I remove it the fan turns off and the ac blows but not cold but you never know with these cars.
Thanks
Thanks
You have to bleed it more. Fan kicks on when you have air in the system. Try bleeding a couple more times.

Just checked my wiring on the fan and it only has 2 connectors so I'm assuming that the 2 stage fan control is done by the fan or relay. I did notice the fuse box having a fan1 and fan 2 for relays but only one relay is present. I've never noticed one missing and the fan has worked well till lately. I did connect the fan plug to the battery directly and it turned on but only on high so now I'm assuming it's the resistor on the fan which I am also assuming controls the two speeds. I could be wrong and the two relays are the problem so I'll start there and buy 2 new ones first. Please let me know if I'm headed in the right direction or just proving that assuming makes an A out of me for sure.
Thats were i would check next since everything else seems ok.

Sorry to bother you again but I've run into a dead end with this fan issue. The fan still turns on after starting the vehicle no matter what the temperature is and stays on for about 6 minutes or so after turning the car off. I have a new coolant temp sensor, new relays, new fan. I've checked the wiring on temp sensor and it is working fine. I'm guessing my Mini has a single stage fan and it is controlled by the ECU and that may be the problem because I checked both relays and they work as they should. Lastly I installed a kill switch for the fan by inserting one wire with the relay into the slot and another to ground and that seems to work when I toggle the switch but only to disengage the ac compressor. It still does not turn off the fan. Is there a way to install the kill switch directly on the fan connector instead?
Thanks
Thanks
Hello, something is up. It should not run the fan, all i can think of is something is not hooked up right with the newer thermostat

I would make sure your thermostat looks like this with the brown sensor at top pointing strait up, or try another thermostat housing, something might be bad with it internally.

Thanks. The new thermostat looks exactly like the one you suggest in the picture including the brown sensor on top. I will go through it again tomorrow and check all the connections but I’m pretty sure they’re all connected real good. What boggles my mind is the fact that I don’t seem to have any coolant leaks at all and I’ve been driving the car for weeks. I bled the system a few times now and see the same results. Today I received a new plug with the two wires, installed it and no difference, the fan stays on. maybe I connected the wires backwards, I’m beginning to get confused and tired.
Every time I remove the sensor from the top of thermostat coolant pours out, about a cup or two then it stops. I’m guessing it’s the pressure. I spoke to a friend who is a retired mechanic and he says that the ecu could have suffered some sort of electrical short somehow but I’m thinking if the ECU was bad why just the sensor? Why not other areas? I don’t think I want to spend a thousand dollars or more replacing and flashing a new ecu so my last resort is to try another kill switch for the fan.
One last thing. Do you know if I there is a way to shorten the time the car keeps the fan on after shut down? I think 6 minutes is a very long time especially if one makes many stops. If I could only bring that number down to half I would be happy. The car has close to 250K miles so I’m thinking she’s just tired like me!
Thanks again.
