No headlights issue

I’ve had this issue on my 2003 mini cooper s r53 where the headlights (high and low) work just fine in warm weather. As soon as it’s cold outside one of the low beam bulbs will not turn on including the highbeam. Today it was very cold out and neither side will turn on high or low.

Previously when one side stopped working the other side would be just fine high and low but the other day neither would turn. The next day I checked the 3 fuses and everything looked good so I tried the lights again and only one side worked, both the high and low. I was stumped but decided one bulb was fine for now but now as of today both sides are not working again.

Does anyone have any idea of what to do to solve this issue? I have an aftermarket hid kit hooked up to the factory halogen type headlights and in warm weather have 0 issues as both low beams and high beams work like normal.

If you have hid on both, might be ballasts. They take a LOT of current to light off, and I wonder if you have relay harness that might have temp sensitive relays.

The ballasts plug straight into the factory headlights so maybe the factory relay isn’t good enough to power them in very cold weather but what’s really strange to me is the halogen high beams also are having problems.

Try unplugging the hids completely and see if if halogen high power on normally after that.
