Hey all, last year I had a crack in my windshield on our 2012 Mini hardtop. I went to Houston Momentum Mini for annual service (I have not had luck with local independent shops), and inquired about replacing the glass — they recommended their preferred installer, the one they use for all Mini windshields.
Anyway, the windshield has been out (I think) 4 times since then. At first the installer put in a defective third-party glass that was fogged, and I had to have them come back and replace it with OEM.
Then it was sealed poorly and allowed water and air to come in. After the most recent re-installation, the trim was installed wrong (the photos with my fingers on the A-pillar/windshield trim), and I noticed a lot of wind noise. The top rubber trim piece had become rippled from being removed and installed so many times.
The installer has been honest and tried to make it right, but now I fear it will never be right again. After I brought up the trim, they tried to fix the trim installation, although they didn’t replace the rippled rubber top piece like I requested.
There is still a lot of ‘whistling’ wind noise, but I don’t know if maybe I’m listening for it, or if it was extra windy on the drive home today.
How much wind noise (whistling) is normal? Should I find a different installer, and if so, what do I look for so I'm not dealing with the same problems again?
The work quality your getting is absolutely unacceptable. Saying that, I'm on the third windshield. OEM, then Safelite. Installation was alright, the top seal across the roofline portion was loose and never fully sealed. Had Safelite replace again, the guy that did it was awesome. Everything seated, firmly in place, no tabs broken, no screws missing. Wind noise has been marginally better since the last install. Quality seems increasingly difficult to find.
Thanks for the info! The people that did the install seemed competent at the time, but the results say otherwise.
All the installers noted that the trim was in good shape, no broken clips or sun damage, the car is always garaged.
Great to hear that you were able to get a good result on the new install. Forgot to mention this last go around for mine, purchased new external A-pillar trims. The new rubber trim that lays on top of the windshield from these units surely helped improved wind noise.
