R55 Timing engine with jmtc clutch - no timing hole
Timing engine with jmtc clutch - no timing hole
I installed a JMTC flywheel and clutch on my R55 and the flywheel does not have a timing hole. I'm honestly not sure how I set the timing when I installed this clutch. Now I need a timing chain replacement. I have the cams locked, the chain is out, and the crank moved with everything apart. How can I properly time the car without the timing hole in the flywheel?
One way or another, you have to lock the crank at 90°, and make sure it doesn't move when setting the cam gears... JMTC is a ***** company for putting out a product like those flywheels. But, I digress...
The "Best" way is to pull the transmission and install a factory flywheel to get the timing lock hole. Failing that, its going to be a crap shoot if you can get the timing set correctly.

Yeah. I was just hoping to leave the engine in, but I do have the original flywheel if it comes to that. After I posted this, I did see some videos / posts about leveling the pistons, piston 1 and 4 on the upstroke, and locking the crank there. I do have that Schwaben tool that bolts to the front of the crank to hold it. But you're right, still a crap shoot.
I had the same problem. I did the clutch a few years ago and converted to a single mass flywheel from OutMotoring. They and I didn't realize there was no hole to lock the flywheel for timing in that kit. I recently had to replace the timing chain and I had to install a new flywheel/clutch so I could time the engine. Very frustrating.
