r56 rear quarter panel and taillight swap on a r53 body

idk if someone already asked about that but i couldn't find any info, i got a 2004 r53 that i recently pulled the engine out and rebuilt it, now i want to fix the rust hole around the rear taillight, my car has be wraped in black for the past 12 years and thats pretty much the only thing keeping the bottom of the taillight in 1 piece. i live in a rust prone area and im already planning on cutting both rear quarter panel and swaping them for new one, i wanna know if i can cut one of a r56 in a scrapyard and make it fit the r53 body, they both look similar and i can make new brackets and wiring to fit the r56 tailight. i dont need to make the whole panel fit on it just the tailight area

Great question, you talking about a full custom job. I’ve seen Chrysler fins on a 57 Chevy aka Chezoom, so with enough time money and metalwork anything custom is possible.

but you should cut the panels off and mock them in place or use a square to check the distance from hatch opening to outer edge of panel and check if the curve is mostly same or not before committing to this. My gut feeling is the taillights are wider as the r56 is bigger, ergo you won’t get it to fit.

the best way to know is by cutting one up and trying, i'll go to a srapyard this weekend get the rear light section and i'll see from there

I’m curious as to the choice of a r56? Why not a r53?

im planning on buying some union flag tailight and the r56 one are better looking than some custum made r53, and way cheaper too, and the r56 one would get rid of the water getting inside the car by the taillight gap too which is better since i dont want to cut it back up and do it again in a couple of years
