2019 Clubman panaromic sunroof won't close

Never thought I'd be back here posting since I sold my R53, however my Dad stopped by with his F54 panaromic sunroof stuck open.

We did find a small black plastic tab in the track, I'm wondering if this engaged the cable? (literally guessing)

When activating we are getting some movement, it appears only the passenger side is getting pulled.

I was able to get it shut by pushing on the driver side while he powered the roof shut and then actuating the sliding black plastic block with a screwdriver to allow the driver side to drop down.

I'm trying to figure out possible next steps and appreciate any insight.

Afraid not, my dad has been to two shops and neither had any idea. The nearest dealer is a ways away so for now it remains unsolved.

Im guessing it will require this kit, but I’m not really lookin to gamble:

Feedback, dealer replaced both sunroof cables at a terribly high price... but it's working now.

Sunroof closing

hello. Wondering if you could explain what the tab you pressed with the screwdriver on the drivers side alliwing the sunroof to drop down. We have the same issue. Passenger side will drop down but drivers will not. Thanks.

I'm a mere 2 days into my F54 ownership - mine also has the sunroof.

I have to say though, that kit looks remarkably similar to the mechanism in my R52 Cooper S convertible. I don't know if you have ever seen one of those, but the R52 has a roof that first opens into a "sunroof" mode by sliding the front part back on two tracks (similar to the two tracks you see your sunroof move in). That component is operated with an electric motor and two cables.
When you press the top switch a second time AFTER the sunroof portion has opened, then a separate hydraulic mechanism is engaged to fold the top back into the back of the car, making it actually a convertible. (not relevant here)

On the first stage of the R52, it's not that tough to fix (go on, ask me how I know ). I had one of my cables break - or rather, it was a little black plastic tab that was required to push against something to lock the top in the fully-forward position. Once it broke, the cable was no longer connected to the front edge of the top, and so I very similar to you saw just the one side of the top being pulled by the sunroof motor - which is an electric motor and completely independent of the actual convertible top mechanism.

I'm not saying it will necessarily be easy to disassemble that, but everything must be accessible once you lower the headliner. And it was actually pretty inherently easy the way the cables go into the motor, made adjusting it easy, left vs right, so the motor pushed squarely and evenly. I'm betting the similarities in the appearance of these cables might mean the rest of it is similar to my experience with my R52 roof/sunroof repair.
I mean those cables are just ridiculously similar looking - they'd have to use a similar motor and all.

Are there any YouTubers known for working on third gen MINIs? ModMini is an invaluable resource in the 1st gen MINI world - and these days it seems there's pretty easy to follow YouTube videos for anything. There might be a video out there of exactly this repair.

Resetting the sunroof:

Resetting a MINI Cooper Sunroof: Instructions
If your MINI Cooper sunroof isn’t working like it should, all you need to do is press and hold the open button until the sunroof fully retracts–then keep holding the button down. After 10 to 15 seconds, the sunroof should ‘reset’ and move back into its original position. This behavior indicates that you’ve reset the system successfully.
If this doesn’t work, there’s one more technique that you can try. Many Minnetonka and St Louis Park drivers find that when a MINI Cooper sunroof is stuck open, you can force it to resume normal functioning by grabbing your key fob and walking away for 30 minutes. When you return, the sunroof should recognize the fob and fix itself.

I have not found someone who did an F56 MINI Cooper sunroof yet in DIY.
