I need to remove the black plastic trim that runs under the rear barn doors (#1 in the attached pic). I've removed the obvious screws and the tail lights, but it seems to be held on by a clip at each end that attaches to the bumper cover, and by some clips under the body of the trim. Before I go whacking away with a pry bar, is there a trick to separating this trim piece from the bumper cover?
Thanks in advance!
In case this helps anyone, you remove the rear bumper cover and then you can get access to these two trip pieces. In my case I needed to get behind the trim to do some rust repair under the barn doors.
Check the under door seals on the driver and passenger side, some Gen 2 MINIs are seeing this also. Used to be a Gen 1 MINI thing and looks like Gen 2 MINI thing now also. If enough people complain MINI might fix it under warranty. https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...-minis-28.html
That's both interesting and discouraging! Our r53 also is rusting out under the rear tail lights.
On the Clubman it never occured to me to go to the dealer; I forgot about the 12 year rust warranty. I'm not sure what is required to get this looked at, since most dealers aren't interested in these older cars
My inclination is to fix the rust myself and move on, but I'd love to hear what others have done.
Is the rust under the rubber trim?
That rubber trim is on really tight. I can't imagine how any moisture would get underneath.
Did you need a pry bar or something to get the rubber trim up?
I get a little nervous about pulling an excessive amount of force on things. I have been known to break things I should not have.
Once you pull the seal you will see it like this but in small spots. Not as bad as the Gen 1 MINIs, but in small 1 inch spots on the top of the rail on the seams
Just looked the attached thread.
Ouch, That looks like a full days worth of work to stop the rust.
What can be done about the nuts and bolts under the hood? They all look like they have some rust on them. I would like to stop the cancer soon than later.
Yep, Gen 1 MINI they covered and their was a TSB about it. See link above about it. Some people out of warranty just did that DIY linked above. Now all those cars are way out of warranty. Gen 2 MINI, most are still under the 12 year/ unlimited miles warranty for rust. But mine was denied when i found it. :( So my guess unless people know about it and complain, their will be no TSB.
Those nuts and bolts under the hood, either replace them or treat with oil or grease. Some people like to use that wax spray they use on underbodies,
ECSTuning,
Have you heard of Evaporust?
I showed a picture of of the door seal at our club meeting. He said Evaporust does not attack anything but the rust.
The previous picture of the door seal could have been taken of my car.
The gentleman that talked about Evaporust swears by it.
Our other cars are American and between 96-108 years old. So I am very interested in how to stop the rust cancer.
Nope just the fertan stuff that's made in germany. https://www.fertanusa.com/ Attacks the rust. That might be the American version that you are talking about?
In my case I had to cut out the rust and weld in a patch under the rear barn doors. Then I treated all the exposed metal with Picklex20 rust-converter, and coated all the exterior surfaces with POR15. I could not get inside the rear sill to paint by hand, so I stuck a 360 deg spray wand extension inside the rear sill and sprayed the inside of the rust repair with POR TopCoat.
