F54 Pre-LCI Tuning kit lost its pops and bangs
Pre-LCI Tuning kit lost its pops and bangs
I have a JCW tuning kit on my 2017 Clubman S. For a couple of years, I would get some raucous pops when down shifting in sport + with the flaps open and a braaap when upshifting. After a last winter they mysteriously went away. I can hear the drone of the exhaust so I know the flaps are still opening but no idea how to get them back. I asked the dealer about cleaning the injectors figuring that may be a fix. They didn’t think would work, and at the cost it’s not worth the experiment.
Is there a fuel cleaner I can try? I going for an oil change in a couple of weeks so maybe now is the time? Any other recommendations?
Any help would be much appreciated.

Did you have any service done or software update at the dealer? That would remove the jcw tuning kit flash?

None that I know of. I most recently had my auto gearbox replaced because of the broken spring, but the issue predated that repair. I imagine they can plug in some diagnostic tool to see if the tune is still there?
Yes, thats what i would check, they might have reprogramed something and removed the flash?

I’m summerizing my car on April 13 so I’ll definitely have them check it out and will post the update. I hope it’s that easy or a fix. I went with the JCW tune because it was supposed to be problem free, but Mini’s are a labor of love.
I wonder how many tuning kits they sold for the F54. Imagine it wasn’t a popular upgrade seeing as it was expensive and not a popular model.

For the F56 MINI Cooper S Pre LCI kit MINI sold a ton from what I know. The F54, F55, and F60 were not near the sales but people still bought them. Some of the newer LCI system dont come with a tune, just the valvetronic.

I had the dealer look at the programming yesterday and the JCW tune is still in the software. The neutered sound is clearly an issue associated with something else. I’m open to suggestions! I’ve always leaned towards oem and oem+ solutions but for the investment in JCW here, it seems I would be getting better support from Dinan.

Weird, no clue then. Were you in sport mode. I know that triggers it more.

Yes ! I spend most of my time in sport plus and often downshift. I get the occasional braaap from 1st to 2nd but no loud pops.
I brought my 2018 countryman s in for service today. It has 21k KM…the said spark plugs are due. The advisor was shocked. The foreman’s said that 2017 and 18’s are getting early service notices but no recall?? Maybe the carbon build up held explain the terrible gas mileage on my f54 and loss of the pops?

Possible, i have not seen carbon build up but plugs on the news ones with Tunes aftermarket dont last long. Let us know.
