The mother of all oil pan problems...

Hey folks...

I've got an '09 Cooper S with 90K on the clock. It's apparent the PO replaced the oil pan gasket with some sealant -- probably that OEM stuff Mini recommends, but could be something else I guess. And boy did they do a good job -- this puppy is stuck stuck stuck.

The typical recommendation is that in case of a stuck pan, hit it softly with a mallet to break the seal. If that doesn't work, hit it harder. Well, I'm up to wailing on it with a sledge and I"m not getting anything. This is killing me. I'd cheerfully destroy and replace the oil pan if I can just get it off...I cant think of a way to cut it off that wouldn't damage the aluminum block...

Anyone got any bright ideas? Similar experiences? I'm at a loss here. Thanks Much!!!

You need to some how break the seal at a convenient location with either a razor or putty knife.
If you can just start somewhere get something under the pan without damage to sealing edge.

mine came off with a couple of hits it was sealed on probably from factory.

Right, @Seaswood had mentioned, “break the seal at a convenient location with either a razor or putty knife. If you can just start somewhere get something under the pan without damage to sealing edge.” Then use a small pry bar and around with it…… Goodluck

Really sounds like you forgot a bolt.
I was trying to knock my pan off realized I missed a bolt?

If a sealer was used it would come off but if a adhesive was used!

I used the gasket no leaks from there I know of.

Yep you need a hot knife or something. I bet they used something stronger then gasket sealer MINI uses or elring dirko gray.

Some people go back to the normal gasket as the liquid can be hard to get off:

If you damage the pan flange we got options at a good price:
