Interior/Exterior Automatic AC Defroster Wind Tunnel
Automatic AC Defroster Wind Tunnel
In my MINI with the automatic AC, is there any way to have the windshield defrost mode on, but not at full blast?
When I need to defrost my windows, I hit the button, and it turns on the "wind tunnel effect"; which is 100% fan speed.
Somewhere in the middle would be nice, a setting where I can defrost the windows and still carry on a conversation with my passenger.
Can anyone offer a suggestion?

Push and hold the defrost button for about 5 seconds, then the system will revert to a 'controllable' mode where you will be able to adjust the fan speed as well as also have air in the footwells. Push the defrost button again to go into blast mode (if you want it)
Does directing the air up using the top directional button right of the display do the same thing? That's how I've been defrosting without the wind tunnel. Good to know about the other option though Greatbear.
that holding down the defrost button thing never seems to work in my 05 MCS with the Auto Air. Haven't tried just using the air direction buttons either though. Normally I just let it blow full blast for a bit if I really need to clean off the front windshield. Doesn't seem to take too long that way to clear it off.
I tried that trick, where you hold down the defrost button for 5 seconds, and VOILA! It worked!
I was able to then hit the minus button, lowering the fan speed while still in defrost mode.
So yes, the trick works. FYI--I have a 2004 MCS w/Automatic AC. Perhaps that trick doesn't work on older versions...

That worked in my 2002 Cooper.
Didn't seem to work in my 2005 yesterday (first time I tried it - but only one time briefly)

I haven't tried that Greatbear but thanks for the tip. From the mixed results, does it seem that this only works with earlier models? Anyone tried this on a post March 03 (seems like Mini changed a lot of things including brake lines thereafter)?
I've been having the same problem with my 02 MCS. Sometimes holding the button for 5 secs works and sometimes it does'nt...It'll shut off instead. I'll also get a blinking green light when its in blast mode and won't go to normal fan speed.
I'm thinking if the interior temp has'nt reached the temp that it's set at, than it will only blast.
I hav'nt spent enough time in the car to figure it out but i'm confident that I'm doing something wrong.
Shutting off the recirculation mode does help to keep the windsheild clear. As a matter of fact...leaving the recirculation mode on seems to cause the windsheild to fog.
Also...according to the owners manual...the defroster button on the bottom left is supposed to heat the back window AND THE WINDSHEILD!!!
Another strange (good) thing happened to me this weekend...I had the car parked outside in the snow for about 6 hours and when I scrapped the glass, the side & back windows were pretty well iced over but the windsheild had snow but NO ICE on it, I beleave the wipers would have cleared the snow off with out scapping first. Sort-of like the windsheild was being heated automatically will the car was parked.
I will tell you this...If I ever order another MINI...I doubt if I would order the climate control...Its not user-friendly enough...should'nt have to "figure it out".
