Navigation & Audio New JVC radio has no sound through Mini speakers
Navigation & AudioBring your GPS and favorite CD or MP3. This is where navigation and audio options for the Cooper (R50), Cabrio (R52), and Cooper S (R53) MINIs are discussed.
My wife has an 05 Mini Cooper S convertible, that she has me work on whenever something goes out (I probably drive it just as much as she does, but it is her car). She wanted a new radio because the stock radio just sucks to say the least. I bought a new JVC and a wiring adapter and wired it in. It comes on and everything works, but there is no sound. I took it out and redid the wires to makes sure there was good connections, put it back in and the same thing, works but no sound. I put the old radio in and the speakers work fine. What am I doing wrong? This isn't a HK raido (at least HK is not posted anywhere in the car or on the speakers so I assume it isn't one). If there were an amp am not sure where it would be located in a convertible, there is nothing under the passenger seat. I believe it is a base stock AM/FM CD player radio so why wont the new JVC play through the speakers? I have posted photos of what I bought to put into it (she likes CDs because she listens to a lot of books). Nothing real fancy, though it would be an easy job. Any information would be helpful as I cannot find anything anywhere other than putting all new speakers and wires throughout the car. Hope to hear back from someone, this forum looks pretty good.
Have you searched for and poured through the varios radio/audio upgrade posts here to see if something seems familar to your situation? My daughter has a '06 R52S with the HK audio system (the amplifier for that is under the passenger seat). When we bought it, it had a Pioneer radio installed, but the HK amp had been removed and wiring really messed up in order to get some sort of sound through the speakers. The work I did to straighten that all out is here: https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...1-working.html .
Do you have a service manual or wiring diagram to work from? If so, I would double-check which wires are connecting to the speaker lines - there may be differences affecting your installation. Also, I have a cheap signal generator that I can use to test speakers and wiring with (like this:
), and that would be good for checking if your speakers work directly connected to the headunit, or if there is an amplifier in the system which would need to be turned on, first.
If your speaker connections are correct, then I really think there is an amplifier (HK) in your vehicle that isn't turning on. There is an adapter needed to use the HK amplikfier with an aftermarket headunit (I used the AX-BM9112).
