How do I know if the immobilizer is active?

I have a 2006 that sat for months with a dead battery. When I replaced the battery, the car will crank (turn over), but won't fire. There does not appear to be spark, and there is no smell of fuel from the exhaust. I don't see anything abnormal on the dash. Could this be an immobilizer problem? How do I know if the immobilizer is running? I tried 2 keys with the same result.

I don't want to tow to a dealer for a mechanical problem, but I don't want to tow to an independent mechanic if it needs the dealer for the immobilizer.

Anything else I should try?

OK, this is *really* embarrassing, but maybe my report will help some other guy. I got my car running. Yay! But I'm kicking myself because it was a simple 5-amp fuse. I know the first step in troubleshooting is to check the fuses, but I skipped it this time thinking it had to be something else because the car sat for a long time. That was a mistake. Moral of the story: ALWAYS check the fuses first!
