F54 Service manual and poor dealer service
Service manual and poor dealer service
I bought a 2022 clubman all4. This is my first mini having spent the past 15 years mostly in and upgrading Hondas. I went to my local dealer this week to order a service manual. AS well I wanted to order 2 new a-pillar moldings that have the HK speakers as mine came without it. Seems reasonable to just order the a-pillar parts and then work on an aftermarket stereo system upgrade, here is what they told me. I would need to give them a VIN # of a car that had those parts in order for them to even look up the part, being new to mini I am asking the group is that reasonable? for a Honda I can go online to a whole bunch of Honda dealers and look up any part for any Honda. This group tells me at the dealer they cannot even look up a part without a VIN. Really?
Additionally they could not order touch up paint or a service manual. Maybe this is just a rant but so far disappointed in my local dealer,

IMO Prefer they use the VIN

Manufacturers use automated parts delivery systems in factories and everyday there could be variations in parts due to supplier availability and other just in time improvements/modifications. We all know that cars are no longer mechanical devices, they are heavily tied into computing subsystems that in themselves have nested computer hardware with versioning to differentiate large collections of parts, build times and software. They also benefit from incremental improvements meant to benefit product performance, manufacturability and cost. The pillar trim you mention probably have several revisions for whatever reason. So there is probably not one unique part.
Also factor in the security embedded in parts management to mitigate theft and insurance fraud which why key body and safety parts are serialized and in many cases have VIN labelling to make chopping up cars more difficult for criminals.
So I would not fault BMW/Mini (or any product manufacturer) for leveraging advanced parts management. IMO the benefits from a product quality, security and assembly point of view far out-weight the inconvenience of keeping a photo of you VIN on your phone. 😁
IMO

I'll happily take the contrary view. It's nonsense. Those parts are not VIN specific. Now, the compatibility with a car that did not come with those parts might be. If I were on that search, I'd fire up Google, and purchase the parts online. I say that because even if you showed back up at the dealer with the PNs of the parts you want, they're going to look at your 2022's VIN and tell you the parts aren't compatible. I suspect they'd have somewhat less trouble if you wanted to pay them to upgrade your audio for you.
Unrelated story: Before I bought my '19, I considered an MB GLA250. I'm stubborn and still do my own oil service 50% of the time. I went to parts and asked about the cost of the oil and filter: "I need the VIN." Me: "I don't own the car, I'm shopping. It's a 2018 GLA250." "I need the VIN." Ho-kay... Went to Service to see what the price would be for the times I had them do the oil change. "I need the VIN..."
I bought the Clubman about three weeks later.

BMW/MINI doesn't make touch up paint for every color, some are limited production or individual colors. By having your vin the parts advisor can get the correct paint code and look up the paint. If it's not made they or you can order a bottle of paint from a body shop.
Their are plenty of parts the parts advisor can correctly identify without having your vin to decode the options on your car to get the correct part number. If your trying to get a part that didn't come on your car and your wanting to do something custom the part they are may not match or fit correctly and you would be charged a restocking fee.
BMW/MINI doesn't make service manuals. Everything is accessible by the dealer from BMW over a secure internet connection. You can subscribe to either bmwtechinfo.com or minitechinfo.com depending on the brand for technical info.

Also, Seattle MINI seems to have an easy, searchable parts list that usually comes up when I do a search to try to find an OEM part number. Here was my first hit for "Seattle MINI interior trim A pillar." May be a starting point for you to refine.
I do agree that it's a pain and some dealers are easier to work with than others. I appreciate the very specific parts tracking, but I too like to tinker with the car and wish it was easier to work with my local dealer to do that. And call me an old fart, but I find it to be a bit of weak sauce that dealer parts desks are basically crippled without a VIN and can't think outside the box. Oh well.

Call the team at ECS, they far surpass dealers, and have parts access that dealer do not.
