How damaging is launching with a manual transmission?
I have an 05 Cooper S with a 15% pulley but nothing else significant. Occasionally, maybe once a month, I like launching the car from a dead stop. I'll rev the car upto around 2500 rpm and let the clutch out pretty quickly. I don't dump it, but I let it out fast enough to give me a decent amount of wheelspin. I understand that this will cause my clutch to wear faster, but will it do stuff like crack the clutch disc, or immediately break something? Should I be concerned if I only do it once a month max? I do want this car to last.
That's an autocross launch - quick, a turn or two of wheelspin, but not crazy.
I've done that to five Minis over the last 15 years or so, and never had a worry with the clutch. My current F56 had the clutch pulled and inspected (and replaced, although it was essentially new) when the Quaife went in. At that point the car had about 60-70 runs on it, and because there was no measurable wear on the clutch, I had to pay for it (not the Extended Warranty).
The way to hurt a clutch is to slip it all the time - a lazy left foot can do it over time. Just spinning the front tires is no big deal, although wheel hop is to be avoided as it can hurt the motor mounts muy pronto.
The bottom line is since the Mini is FWD the grip available for acceleration is very limited, and the stresses involved in using all of it are not that large.
Cheers,
Charlie
