Apologies for the off topic, but I'm wondering when this trend of upcharging certain parts prices started?
BMW seems particularly bad about it, but I've heard other manufacturers do it too.
Never have I seen parts prices go up as time goes on, usually they go down so the warehouse can be cleared of inventory and the parts go NLA.
I come from Saabworld and distinctly remember in 1994 when the new 900 came out that the parts prices for the og900 went down, and then a few years later they lowered even further to fire sale prices --- I remember getting some real bargains.
When did the paradigm change?
Is this upcharge practice related to the collision industry?
Or simply Econ 101 related to supply & demand which the auto makers have gotten hip to these days?
In particular the GP i/c is absolutely bonkers with the % of price increase over time and I think it may be related to inventory how they've structured their pricing scale --- as on-hand units go down, the price seems to go up.
Witnessed this first-hand because I regularly check part # 17517565302 and noticed a price bump just after someone purchased one,
this thread made me check again and indeed the $$$ had went to $$$$$...

...makes me wonder how many brand new units are left on-hand?
Likely not very many.
RealOEM is frozen in time with parts pricing at time of release,
back then it was $382.47 -

- but today?
JAYSUS!
It has gone through the damn roof to astoundingly astronomical heights.
