My nav system does not come on when I start the MINI after being out in the cold.
If I restart after afew miles of motoring it will join the fun. Has anyone else had this problem?

Hey, SuperDave, I'm in Chicago. too, but don't have my MINI yet. I'll have her parked in a heated garage here at home, but I'll be interested to see if she has the same problem. I'll have to wait until January to find out, though. Thanks for the heads up.

Not exactly... but the other day when we had single digit temps here in PA, I noticed that the LCD monitor looked as dim as it does with the lights on. I turned the lights on and off and on and off and on and off (you get the idea) while driving down the driveway and watching the screen to see if I could make out any change in the brightness - and I couldn't. (Anyone watching must have thought I was nuts!) It must have been too cold to get bright.

Sorry, I doubt if that helps answer your question though.

I have seen this happen even in the upper 20's. The screen always comes back after a drive and restart though.

I've had the same problem with nothing on the screen in cold weather. However, after the interior heats up and I turn off and restart the car, the nav system is there. Haven't talked to the dealer yet. But I assume the problem is the screen. Same kinda problem when I leave my cell phone in the car on a cold night. The numbers move VERY slowly across the cell phone display. My guess is that the nav system can't initialize the cold screen.

I know some CD players don't work in very cold temps. At first I though that was the reason the system did not start up in the cold. After I thought about it more I thought at least the MINI logo should come up even if the data CD can not be read. The screen is probably an LCD display and therefore a bit sleepy in the lower temps.

Barky,

I am in the near west burbs. about 4 blocks from the city limits. What dealer did you order from?

Patrick MINI. My motoring advisor is Kevin McConnell, who is absolutely terrific. My hubby bought his Z3 from Patrick BMW and we've been very happy with the service, so it was a no-brainer to go there for my MINI (even though we live downtown near Navy Pier).

Once MINI arrives, I'll be posting to the dealer rating system about my overall buying experience.

I looked a Patrick but they had a long wait list, I work right near Schaumburg so I may do some service work there. You will Love your MINI, I am (Soon) giving up a C36-AMG Mercedes for my MCS and do not regret it!

Superdave,

I have the exact same problem as you. In fact I live in Southern California, and on three separate cold morning occassions, the nav system was blank.

Keep in mind, that our cold is nothing like your cold... I think it was about 40-45 degrees each time it happened.

We're taking it in under warranty this Tuesday, as we also have problems bringing up destination type information (restaurants, gas stations, etc.). Whenever we try to bring up that type of information, the nav system reboots itself.

weird i just posted another thread on this same topic...

appearently mini is aware of this problem as they recently sent a memo to the dealers saying that the system does have problems under 37 degrees. we have the problem a lot up here in seattle right now. we recently went on a long trip to CA and had no probs the whole way. as soon as we got back the problem started again.

kind sucks really. maybe the cold weather package should include a "screen heater".

curt

>>as far as the info and reboot problem: save your selves a troip to the dealer. we had the SAME thing and all you have to do is reset the launguage setting a couple of times (go to french back to english an couples of times) and it should fix the problem. some kind of bug i guess. maybe it's running windows  I'll have to try it out tonight. Anyway, how did you get to figuring out that solution?
