Clutch is done.

Hello all. The clutch on my 2014 base clubman, with 94,000 miles, has gone south. The repair shop will charge $4500.00 to replace it. I know it is a big job. Does anyone know the price ranges for this repair? I just might trash the car, and move onto a more reliable brand.
Thank you.

$4500 is about twice as much as it should cost.

If you purchase the parts on your own, should only cost ~$1100 for a new clutch kit and flywheel. There are some other smaller parts in there that should be replaced when changing the clutch too. A decent independent shop should only charge about ~$1000-1200 for labor. If the rest of the car is still in good shape, might want to shop around.

It's like something a MINI dealership would charge.

My clutch replacement at my mechanic was $1400. Are the putting a new transmission in?

Call them out on their INSANE RIP OFF and go somewhere else. Seriously, tell them that's BS.

Yikes! Although I don't have a manual I'm shocked that a clutch, cover and release bearing/slave (are they one unit) would cost that much. when I did the one in my Saab I think I paid something like $350 for the whole shebang.

And is the flywheel a replacement item on a clutch job? that seems a bit over the top.

Flywheel can’t really be resurfaced, so should be replaced. Other items like lever, guide tube, seals, and a few smaller items are good to have on hand when doing the clutch job kit because it’s so involved to get in there. For the job itself, it’s just a long tedious project to get to the clutch which Jack’s up the labor cost.

yea, I get the labor cost. The clutch job on the FWD Saab 9-5 is no walk in the park either. And the slave/release bearing is a single unit (hydraulic) so it's wise to replace that while you're in there). But the parts cost of $1100 for a clutch kit and related parts? like I said I paid something like $350 for the clutch, cover, slave/release and a plastic alignment shaft.

You can go cheaper on the clutch kit with aftermarket parts on the order of ~$850 including a flywheel.
An OEM clutch kit and flywheel will cost ~$1800 just in parts cost.
By comparison, a performance kit from ClutchMasters (clutch, pressure plate, bearing, and flywheel) will run ~$1100.

Prices above do not include clutch fork, pivot pin, seals, etc.

wow, that's insane.

Glad I have an auto box! A rebuild of the auto box would likely be less than $1800, not including taking it out and putting it back.
