R53 Clutch Job advice- DIY? and What Else?

Hi All - I have been tackling some deferred maintenance in my driveway, slowly adding upgrades to my R53 with 127k on the clock...

I've come to the realization that the clutch is in need of replacement and have read up on a few DIY threads on here. I'm not sure it's something I want to do in my gravel driveway, but I was just quoted around $3k for the job (with the Valeo clutch/flywheel kit).

My first question is - does that quote sound right? I know it's a heck of an undertaking, but an 11 hour job for a shop?? (independent BMW/MINI shop who has done some other work for me in the past)

Second question for those who have done it - is it doable for a shade-tree mechanic?

Third question is what else should I change/upgrade while most of front end is off? I'd definitely want to get the most bang for my wrenching buck whether I do it or bring it to the shop.

This is a non-DD that enjoy spirited coastal drives, and may start to see some track time.. Thanks in advance guys!

D

can't say what shops in your area should charge.

But for sure when you do the job I would replace the front control arm bushings, sway bar bushings, and steering rack.

also the rear main seal

and clutch fork bushings

Otherwise just inspect and see what else overlaps with the job that you actually need when the trans and subframe is out.

I did my clutch and flywheel after getting quoted 2.3k from Mini. ModMini has a two part YouTube video that I watched and followed. He goes into it step by step, shows and explains everything.

Either way you'll be getting a few more orders from me! I may look into using a friends garage and making all those upgrades myself.

Thanks!

Way will be able to answer about the difference but a word of caution, that seal is very easy to damage when you're trying to get it in.

If you can turn a wrench, you can replace your clutch. It's a lengthy job and you have to dismantle quite a bit of the front end but you'll learn a lot about your MINI. I just changed mine to a Valeo unit and I love it. +1 on ModMini's YouTube video. I used it and it was extremely helpful.

Just to add on to this, I had only done basic oil changes and brakes before I decided to go at the clutch. I documented most of the process here on these forums. I learned so, so much about my Mini and really just cars in general. Be warned though, once you're down there and you start wrapping your arms around everything you're going to want to start replacing anything and everything you can. It's definitely not a bad thing at all, just understand that this is going to be the best opportunity for you to replace a lot of worn gaskets, hoses, etc. so budget for it.

Thanks guys. I've used a combination of DIY posts here on NAM, and ModMini's tube page to save a lot and learn a lot so far, this will be a big step! I do plan to swap out the radiator and hoses, as well as an axle while I'm in there, I suppose I should look into other hose replacements as well!

My @WayMotorWorks wish list is going to get a lot longer! But DIY vs. shop labor opens up the budget!

Can anyone speak to the Quaife LSD, as far as value for a weekend road driver? "needed" while I'm in there too?

I was looking at potentially throwing the Quaife LSD in my Mini at the time. In doing my research the general consensus was the money is better used elsewhere while you're building the car up. I also didn't really have the funds at the time and didn't have the same aspirations of getting my Mini to 240hp+ like I do today.

If you're planning on keeping the car forever and you have the extra funds available on top of all of the other work you're going to (and need to) do, sure. However, as far as just a daily driver it's my understanding it's not necessary but I'll let someone else comment on that.
